Squid Game 3 Fan Theory Suggests A Tragic Transformation For Gi-hun

Squid Game is set to return for its final season nearly five months from now. There are rumors that one of its characters, Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae), could undergo a massive transformation, and if this happens, many might be surprised, but it’s a great twist, though the reception will surely be mixed.

Squid Game is a South Korean survival drama thriller by filmmaker Hwang Dong-hyuk. It was a massive success and dominated Netflix for weeks when it arrived at the streaming giant in September 2021. Due to the warm reception, Netflix renewed it for two more seasons and Season 2 was as successful. Now fans are eagerly waiting for Season 3, especially because the second season ended with a “bold” cliffhanger. There are various rumors about the upcoming season, and one suggests that we might see Gi-hun as a totally different character.

Squid Game has attracted several fan theories over the years – from Gi-hun and the Front Man/Hwang In-ho being Oh Il-nam’s son, the Front Man being an undercover cop and the island being a ship. One of the newest theories suggests that Gi-hun could be the next Front Man due to despair after the rebellion he started failed and caused the deaths of many players, including his childhood best friend Park Jung-bae (Lee Seo-hwan). Per Soap Central, the death of Gi-hun’s close pal could lead him to his dark side. It could be his last straw to change his perspective on life and morality. He might join the evil forces instead of fighting against them after seeing that his efforts didn’t work.

Also, he shares several similarities with the Front Man, which indicates that he could follow the former’s path. First, both won the fatal tournament, they were both lactose intolerant and they felt manipulated by the system. Gi-hun and the Front Man had several conversations in Squid Game Season 2 after the latter joined the tournament as Player 001. Based on the backstory, In-ho was a former police officer who was fired from the office. In his conversation with Gi-hun in Episode 4, he said he borrowed money from an “old client” and he got in trouble for it because the higher officers deemed it bribery. He did it because his wife was sick and he joined Squid Game for the same reason as Gi-hun but later became disillusioned. The Squid Game creator acknowledged their similarities. “In-ho (Front Man) is just like Gi-hun: someone who entered the Squid Game with very similar purposes,” Dong-hyuk told The Hollywood Reporter. “He experienced all of the cruelties, saw the rock bottom of humanity, was extremely disappointed, which led to him giving up humanity altogether. That’s how he became a host.”

There’s no doubt that Gi-hun becoming the next Front Man can be a big twist. However, since there are a lot of eagle-eyed fans who are into every minute detail of the series, this might not be a complete surprise to them. Since Squid Game Season 3 will wrap up Gi-hun’s story, it’s best to come full circle. Gi-hun used to be kind, naive and emotional. However, the deadly game turned him into a vengeful and hard individual. The Front Man could have a change of heart and help Gi-hun save the other players; in this way, both characters will have redemption. It won’t take long, and fans will soon find out what will happen next.
