Roblox Stock is Down

Roblox shares have fallen by as much as 20% after a disappointing performance in Q4 2024. At its peak, the online community was a massive success, and it still is in many regards, but a string of blows to its finances and reputation have left investors feeling less than optimistic about its future. Now that the numbers for the last quarter are in, Roblox is off to a shaky start in 2025.

The last year was a challenging one for the game creation sandbox. Amid rising concerns over video game addiction, Roblox was part of a series of video game lawsuits, and while courts ultimately dropped several of the charges, that kind of publicity is not great for a platform largely targeted toward a younger audience. Accusations of child exploitation and lying to investors further sullied the Roblox Corporation’s image, and the economic fallout of this reputational damage is now clear.

A major feature is coming to Roblox on consoles in 2025, and it promises to change the overall gameplay experience for PlayStation and Xbox players.

Bloomberg reports that Roblox saw a 4% drop in daily active users at the end of 2024. The 85.3 million user base was also shy of previous expectations, which predicted the platform would see as many as 88.4 million active users during the quarter. Engagement likewise fell by 9.7% as the players who did log in to the game each day spent less time on it. These lower-than-expected figures come after accusations that Roblox inflated its player count and engagement numbers in previous reports, although the Roblox Corporation has denied these allegations.

Roblox Shares Fall by 20% After Drop in Sales and User Engagement

On top of losing daily users and average engagement time, Roblox saw less income in the last quarter than it had initially expected. Sales totaled $1.35 billion, which, while impressive, is shy of the $1.37 billion target the company had hoped to see in the same period. Much of the decline is likely due to a huge loss in the Eastern European market. In August 2024, the Turkish government banned Roblox for all users in the country, citing accusations of child labor and concerns over what the platform may expose children to. It’s unclear if or when the ban will be lifted, but Q4 2024 marked the first full quarter without that market.

Amid growing publicity issues, the company has taken several steps to develop a more positive public image. In late 2024, Roblox added new restrictions for users under 13, including giving parents more control over screen time and content limits. How these adjustments will impact its future performance is uncertain for now, but Roblox likely has some work ahead of it to recover from this recent downturn.
