Nier: Automata is a successful JRPG released in 2017 that introduced players to a dystopian future where machines went out of control and declared war on human beings, forcing them to flee the planet and create a resistance android army on the Moon aimed at reclaiming Earth. The game was a sequel to 2010’s NieR, featuring the same artistic and narrative style, exploring deep themes, and offering a complex story with many different outcomes. Rumors about a new entry in the NieR franchise have been circulating for the past few years, though nothing has been officially confirmed yet.

Adding to the speculation surrounding a new NieR: Automata game, GamesIndustry contributor Daniel Camilo took to Twitter to inform the community that a sequel to the game is in development and will be revealed in 2025. Even though Camilo didn’t provide any details or proof to support his claims, there have been several hints in the past that build up the theory of a new NieR game, potentially lending credibility to this information.

Rumors Suggest a NieR: Automata Sequel Announcement in 2025

In November 2023, a Square Enix producer touched upon the possibility of a new NieR game, stating that as long as Yoko Taro (the franchise creator) was still alive, a new entry was possible. Later, in May 2024, Square Enix executive officer and NieR series producer Yosuke Saito mentioned a collaboration with Yoko Taro, though he didn’t specifically reveal what this project was about.

Earlier in 2024, Yoko Taro himself sparked speculation about a new NieR series announcement while celebrating the game’s milestone of 8 million units sold. The famous game director took the stage and told fans that if they wanted a sequel to NieR: Automata, their applause should be the loudest of the evening—and the crowd immediately followed his request.

On top of all that, adding to the hints and speculation, Yosuke Saito revealed in a recent interview that 2025 was going to be a “milestone” year and Square Enix wanted to do something regarding the NieR series. Even though all this has sparked excitement among fans eager to see a new entry in the franchise, no official or concrete information has been disclosed yet, though it seems almost obvious that something is happening behind the scenes. While players continue waiting for a NieR reveal, Daniel Camilo’s tweet has further fueled speculation.
