A horse is a great way to traverse the world of Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2. Here’s how to get one.

Although you can use a spade in Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2‘s Fortuna quest, sadly, you don’t get to keep it and will need to track one down elsewhere once you reach the town of Troskowitz. Fortunately, finding a spade in the early stages of the game is pretty straightforward, whether you want to delve into thievery or get hold of one the honorable way.

Where To Steal a Spade Near Troskowitz

If you’re looking for a spade in the Trosky region of Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2‘s expansive map, luckily, you don’t need to travel far from Troskowitz. One of the nearest places to find a spade early in the game is inside a small graveyard east of Troskowitz called Troskowitz Cemetary. Follow the path east until you reach the graveyard, which is easily reachable on foot, as pictured on the map above.

At the back of the graveyard, you can find a spade propped conveniently against the wall of the building. However, the only way to grab and add this particular spade to your inventory is by stealing it. Of course, the game’s NPCs won’t take kindly to thievery, so make sure no one sees you take the spade to avoid getting caught committing a crime if you plan on swiping it. Fortunately, grave keeper Ignatius tends to have his back turned most of the time, so it is possible to steal the spade during the day without him spotting you. While Ignatius unfortunately can’t offer you any work, he does have some handy information to share about the town.

Although graveyards are often the first place to check while searching for a spade in other locations, it’s also possible to find spades in certain spots across the open world, such as in outhouses next to buildings like taverns in towns.

Where to Buy a Spade

If you don’t want to resort to theft or don’t want stolen goods in your inventory, you can also buy a spade from some Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 vendors, such as merchants like Merchant Jurg Thömel located west of Troskowitz. Jurg sells a spade for 6.8 Grochen, making it fairly affordable even if you don’t have much cash. When browsing other types of vendors in the game, it’s also worth looking out for a spade if you haven’t snagged one yet. Of course, you’ll have to sell stolen goods elsewhere if you plan on selling any stolen spades or other items in your inventory.

Grave robbing in Kingdom Come Deliverance 2

Once you get a spade, you can’t dig holes in the ground wherever you like. To use a spade in Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, you’ll first need to track down specific dig spots and ensure you have the spade in your inventory. For instance, you can approach a grave or dig spot and look for the ‘Rob the Grave’ or ‘Start Digging’ text prompt on the bottom-right of the screen to trigger a short cutscene of Henry digging with the spade, such as when digging up fresh graves. You can then loot the grave by holding the E button (if playing the game on PC), taking you to an inventory menu where you can pick and choose what to steal.

Using the shovel to dig or rob graves is dirty work, so make sure you have a wash or clean your clothes afterward to preserve Henry’s appearance and how other NPCs react to him. Additionally, while you’ll need a spade to dig graves, you’ll need a shovel for tossing sand.
