Putting Blumhouse’s latest project, Heart Eyes, into the “slasher movie” box doesn’t really do the film justice. Directed by Josh Ruben, and starring Scream 7‘s Mason Gooding as Jay and Cruel Summer‘s Olivia Holt as Ally, Heart Eyes blends elements of humor, romance, and horror into a unique cinematic experience. Ally is a disenchanted advertising professional, and Jay is a charismatic marketing expert who just might be about to take her job after a failed advertising campaign for her company has her under fire.
Set against the backdrop of Valentine’s Day, the narrative intertwines a burgeoning romance with the looming threat of a serial killer known as the “Heart Eyes Killer” or “HEK.” The movie uses its inventive fusion of genres, offering both lighthearted romantic moments and suspenseful horror sequences. As Ally and Jay navigate their personal and professional challenges, they find themselves inadvertently entangled in the deadly pursuits of the Heart Eyes killer, leading to a thrilling and unexpected climax.

The Black Phone 2 is an upcoming sequel from Blumhouse, and horror fans will want to know the latest update about The Grabber’s story.
What Is Heart Eyes About
Having recently gone through a difficult breakup, Ally has developed a cynical outlook on love. Her skepticism is reflected in her latest marketing campaign, which highlights the flaws in romantic relationships rather than celebrating love. However, her campaign is met with backlash, as a string of murders committed by the Heart Eyes killer has left the city on edge. The killer, known for targeting romantic couples, has created a climate of fear, making Ally’s cynical campaign seem even more insensitive.
To remedy the situation, Ally’s boss, Crystal (Gina Gershon), pairs her with Jay, a charismatic and highly successful freelance marketing consultant brought in to salvage the company’s public image. Jay, who thrives on romantic optimism, is the polar opposite of Ally. While she believes love is overrated and destined to fail, Jay is a firm believer in grand romantic gestures and the magic of connection. Their conflicting ideologies create tension, as Ally resents being forced to work with someone who embodies everything she no longer believes in. Jay, on the other hand, sees Ally’s pessimism as a challenge and is determined to change her perspective.
As Ally and Jay are forced to collaborate, it looks like they are about to go their separate ways when their dynamic takes an unexpected turn after they run into Ally’s ex-boyfriend outside of a restaurant. In a spontaneous and somewhat awkward moment, Ally kisses Jay to make her ex jealous. While the move is meant to be harmless, it inadvertently puts them in the crosshairs of the Heart Eyes killer, who targets those perceived to be in love.
While the move is meant to be harmless, it inadvertently puts them in the crosshairs of the Heart Eyes killer, who targets those perceived to be in love.
Not knowing that they have been targeted, the pair share an ride share back to Ally’s apartment where they are once again looking to separate until Jay realized that Ally has locked herself out, and injures himself helping her get into her apartment building. Once they go to her apartment to get Jay some first aid, HEK pops out from Ally’s closet, and the chase is on, the horror movie starts to resemble many other slasher flicks as they run for their lives.
Originally the couple appear to escape the Heart Eyes Killer (professing along the way that they aren’t a couple and shouldn’t even be targeted). However, Jay is arrested and charged as HEK by Detective Hobbes (Final Destination‘s Devon Sawa) and Detective Shaw (Jordana Brewster). However, the killer shows up at the police station, kills some cops and chases Ally and Jay as they flee to a Valentine’s Day drive in movie where HEK claims a few more victims before the couple decide to fight him rather than let anyone else die.
How Does Heart Eyes End?
After Ally and Jay team up to kill the HEK, they think the ordeal is over. Jay tries to get Ally to admit a spark has formed between the two, but she turns him down and he leaves the scene with Detective Shaw, who survived the police station attack by the Heart Eyes Killer.

After realizing she has feelings for Jay, Ally receives a call from the Heart Eyes Killer, demanding she go to a church if she wants to see Jay alive again. When she arrives, it’s revealed that the HEK is three people. The person the couple killed at the drive-in, Detective Shaw and her husband is David, who Ally briefly met (and was asked out) earlier in the film.
Jay and Ally get into a physical confrontation with Shaw and David and eventually manage to overcome and kill the two serial killers, ending the Heart Eyes Killer’s reign of terror once and for all. In the film’s final moments, the slasher flick transforms into a straight romance where Ally flips the script on Jay a year later and proposes marriage after he asked her to move in with him, because he knows she’s scared of romantic gestures. The two, it would seem, live happily ever after.
