Summary

  • GTA 5 sells 210M copies, with 5M sold in 3 months – showing continued success late in its lifespan.
  • Red Dead Redemption 2 sells 70M copies, seeing growth despite lack of major updates.
  • GTA 6 teased from Take-Two Interactive – potential for new sales records, likely 2025 release.

Grand Theft Auto 5 has hit another incredible sales milestone, with a new report emerging from Take-Two Interactive regarding its success. GTA 5 isn’t the only winner, as Red Dead Redemption 2 has also seen a boost over the final months of 2024.

While most Grand Theft Auto fans are desperate to see and hear more regarding GTA 6, the current title is still experiencing tremendous success. In addition to the title’s heavily-praised single-player story mode, some of the draw is also likely due to GTA Online, which many players still regularly enjoy.

Another 2K Property Proves Grand Theft Auto 6 Has to Tread Carefully With One Character Type

GTA 6 has teased poking fun at influencer culture, but a surprising game serves as a strong reminder to not go too heavy on the satire.

Now, in a Take-Two Interactive announcement, it’s come to light that GTA 5 has now reached a whopping 210 million copies sold over the course of its lifetime. While this number greatly surpasses even some of the best-selling video games ever, the game is still showing remarkable growth this late into its lifespan. Take-Two indicates that Grand Theft Auto 5 sold 5 million copies in the final three months of the year, an average of more than 1.5 million copies per month. Many games would be considered a success to sell that many copies in their lifetime, let alone in such a short period of time, and so long after launching.

Red Dead Redemption 2 Sees Similar Success

Although many fans have been disappointed by the lack of attention Red Dead Redemption 2 received post-launch, it doesn’t seem to stop players from trying it out. While Red Dead Redemption 2 sales pale in comparison to those that GTA 5 has seen, it’s now reached an impressive 70 million copies sold. Like GTA 5, Red Dead Redemption 2 did quite well for itself in 2024, moving an additional three million copies in the quarter. Red Dead Redemption 2 is six years old, and its online component is no longer receiving major content updates, so this number is nothing to scoff at.

While it remains to be seen if Grand Theft Auto 6 can live up to the hype that the series has built, it seems likely that it will achieve new sales records for Rockstar Games and Take-Two Interactive. At the moment, it seems that Grand Theft Auto 6 will launch in the autumn of 2025, which still leaves GTA 5 quite a bit of time to rack up even more sales. While GTA 5 will likely see at least somewhat of a drop-off in its sales after that point, Red Dead Redemption 2 stands a good chance of continuing to be a strong seller for years.
