How Many Ninja Gaiden Games Are There?
There are quite a few versions of each Ninja Gaiden game. Here’s all of them, and which is best to start with.
Ninja Gaiden Black 2 is a mixed hybrid between remastering Ninja Gaiden 2 and Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2, removing most of the added bosses while keeping some of the level changes added in Sigma 2. For returning veterans of the series, there are little to no major surprises to expect.

Submit, Or Die!
Facing The Lord of Flame
This level is pretty hard. The challenge is to navigate the minefields hidden in the snow, facing the rocket launcher ninjas that a peppered about, facing a massive sub-boss that you fought before in New York, and working your way up the clock tower to face Zedonius. Zedonius is a tough foe, but he’s nowhere near as hard as the trek to reach him.
This is one of the few levels in Ninja Gaiden 2 Black where platforming is a precise exercise between patience and frustration. Beware where the gears meet, cause that grinds up your health. But the enemies also suffer this grim fate so it’s worth baiting them to their doom.

Heart of Darkness
Navigating The Amazon Dangers
This level is full of water, searchlight situations, and rocket-blasting ninjas. It’s a little tough, especially when you get blasted/thrown into the water and forced to navigate between swimming and running on water.
Several new fiendish monsters will take some getting used to in this level from swarms of larva monsters to hulking zombie-like fiends with a cannon arm and a chainsaw arm. The dragon boss at the end of the level serves as a fun icing on the cake of this absurdly challenging level.

The Aqua Capital
Exploring The City Of The Water
This is a fun level where you’re introduced to the hefty werewolf minions of Vulf. Different types of fiends will appear throughout this area as Vulf incites a full-on monster raid on the city in hopes of finding a worthy opponent. You’ll have a great time slashing the fiends and getting accustomed to some of the more resilient monsters.

After Ninja Gaiden 2, We Need A Remake Of Ninja Gaiden Black
Ninja Gaiden Black still holds up, but it could benefit greatly from some small tweaks and a fresh new look.
The Aqua Capital is one of the more nonlinear levels in the campaign and it’s pretty easy to lose your way without the ninja waypoint keeping you on track of where to go. Without a full idea of the stage, you could also miss out on crystal skulls and treasure chests. Exploration is rewarded in this level.

The Shrine Maiden’s Battle
Momiji’s Mission
This level features Ryu Hayabusa’s former student, Momiji, who is the next shrine maiden of the Hayabusa village. Going on a quest to save a young boy from a pair of tengu, you play in the Sky City Tokyo level and wield her graceful weapon that gives you agile attacks against enemies.
Momiji is the first of the three female characters you play in these short add-on chapters that were added to Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2, which was brought into Black 2. These chapters tend to be short, you don’t need to upgrade her weapon, and the level has at least one Muramasa shop for any healing items you may need. But they are fun and it gives you an idea of how to play as these other characters for the online trials.

Night in the City of Water
Ayane’s Quest
In this level, you return to the city that was once terrorized by Vulf and his legion. This time you play Ayane, a popular character from Dead or Alive who actively shows up in Ninja Gaiden. her fighting style, BGM, and the overall swift pacing of the level make it a great break between the Ryu Hayabusa levels.
Out of the three additional levels that featured the characters introduced from Sigma 2, Ayane’s level is the shortest and simplest. It helps that nothing changed level-wise from the Sigma 2 release. Ayane’s fighting style with her two kodachi are based on her twirly spinning moveset from the DOA series and her explosive kunai helps make things easier when picking off enemy ninjas and fiends.

Sky City Tokyo
Ryu Hayabusa Arrives
The first chapter of the game and the one that will make or break how your experience of the game is going to be. From the moment you start, you’re already fighting against the ninjas of the Black Spider Clan. If you had a hard time defeating them then chances are the rest of the game won’t get any easier so start getting those weapon combos and block/dodge prompts memorized.

Ryu Won’t Be Playable As Much As Yakumo In Ninja Gaiden 4
Ninja Gaiden 4’s new protagonist will, perhaps unsurprisingly, be the game’s main focus.
Other than that, the first level does a good job showcasing all the different things you’ll need to know, from save stations that heal you once to opening treasure chests, running and jumping off walls, and performing finishing blows and ninpo attacks. The Buddha statue bosses from Sigma 2 do not return, so the only boss you need to worry about is Rasetsu at the end of the level and he isn’t too hard. Overall, this is the best level to determine whether you would be interested in continuing you playthrough or not.

City of the Fallen Goddess
Rachel’s Hunt
In this level, you return to New York City as Rachel, the fiend hunter from the first installment of the Ninja Gaiden Remake trilogy. With the Inferno Hammer and a Gatling gun, she can shred through the fiends in the level as she navigates towards Marbus, the boss of the level and a returning menace from the first Ninja Gaiden.
Compared to Ayane and Momiji, Rachel’s weapons and attacks a fearsome and highly damaging, tearing through fiends big and small, especially since Rachel can take on attackers faster than Ryu with his bigger weapons. And the Gatling gun can shred through faraway enemies before they can even close the distance. This is one of the easiest and most power-inducing of the three bonus levels.
3
The Lycanthrope’s Castle
Throne Of Wolves
This level takes you just after you defeat the Water Dragon as you navigate your way back to the surface to confront Vulf. You do have to face the giant skeleton monster. Getting into the Castle of Vulf gives major Castlevania vibes as well, from fighting werewolves to navigating the different rooms in the medieval-styled area.
This level gets exciting and epic once you reach the castle, by this point, Vulf notices Ryu Hayabusa and unleashes a storm that shrouds the entire area, before waiting to meet you and invite you to a death battle in the coliseum. This whole moment was iconic and BGM that played as you made your way to the castle through the storm is one of the better soundtrack moments in Ninja Gaiden period.
2
The Underworld Abyss
Fighting Through The Underworld
This is the second to last chapter After you slay Vulf and Zedonius for the second and last time, You navigate through the coiling underworld as you reach the chamber to face the Archfiend. This is the second to last hurdle of enemies you will face, from fiend ninjas to the other monstrous entities that inhabit the region.
It’s also the last place you face Alexei and the tengu duo. Much of your battles in this chapter are preparation for the boss gauntlet you’ll face in the last chapter. After this, there isn’t much left to do and face. This is considered the easiest of the last three levels in the underworld.
1
The Tempered Gravestone
The Final March To Mount Fuji
This level brings you back to the Hayabusa Village. Your mission is to head to Mount Fuji to defeat the awakening Archfiend. But before that, Ayane gives Ryu Hayabusa a mystical item of formidable power, The Eye of the Dragon. With it, the Dragon Sword, no matter what level you had before, fully upgrades to become the True Dragon Sword.
This whole level is a katana-slashing power trip, as you hack through the last vestiges of the Black Spider Clan. By this point, the climactic battle against Genshin and the Archfiend is set in place and the whole atmosphere of the level screams “final battle”.
