The Massively Multiplayer Online (MMO) genre has risen over the decades to take its rightful place among the best gaming genres out there. However, with the increase in popularity comes a wave of games that tend to fall into the shadows. For those new to the MMO scene, it can be overwhelming to try and pluck a favorite from the ether.

Baldur’s Gate 3: 10 Best Summons

From dryads to dogs and everything in between, we rank the best summons in Baldur’s Gate 3.

Moreover, most games cost money, whether through the game’s actual price, a monthly subscription fee (like with World of Warcraft), or in-game purchases. In the past few years, many MMOs have become free-to-play. It’s the perfect opportunity to cut costs by taking advantage of the free MMOs available. Many great games in the past have been free; just look at the obvious Fortnite or League of Legends.

Updated February 07, 2025, by Sanyam Jain: This list has been updated with more information about each game so that you can have an easier time deciding just what is right for you!

PlanetSide 2

PlanetSide 2. Poster of different characters, all wearing variations of armor.

The tremendous influx of first-person shooters has all but taken over the gaming industry. Most of these games share a strikingly similar visual style, but not Planetside 2. Instead, the game offers enormous maps that host hundreds of players at a time, often resulting in pure, all-out chaos.

The great thing about this game is you aren’t locked into any one class. The freedom PlanetSide 2 presents provides you with bundles of replayability and uniqueness every time you log on to play. You can also switch between using the terrain for an advantage or taking to the air to keep things especially interesting. The most challenging choice is deciding which of the three factions to join.

The downside to playing PlanetSide 2 on PlayStation, however, is that the game’s been largely abandoned by the developers. Player count isn’t great as a result. We’d sooner recommend PC, so why is it on our list? It’s still worth checking out if PS4’s your option. Just know it’s not quite what PC is.

DC Universe Online

DC Universe Online. Characters from left to right; Cyborg, Raven, Robin, Beast Boy and Starfire.

DC Universe Online filled a massive void in the RPG market. And even after a decade, it’s still going strong, which is a good sign for any game — especially one that features an entire roster of childhood heroes from Batman and Hawkgirl to more obscure characters like Hades and Saint Walker.

Fans rarely get access to all the lesser-known characters when working with previous, well-known IPs. But the RPG format ensures that there’s space for everyone; no matter how obscure the DC character, you should easily find your favorite.

Enlisted

We all know that at least one of you is a WWII fanatic, and rightfully so. How can you not be? That’s why you would love to get your hands on Enlisted, the MMO that has you play through some of the most important scenarios of WWII.

Final Fantasy 14: All Ultimate Raid Weapon Sets, Ranked

Final Fantasy 14’s Ultimate Raid Weapons are always the coolest-looking and best-performing weapons in the game, but which set was the best?

Sure, there are the classic Berlin and Omaha Beach, but you also get to fight in the North African territory, like Tunisia, and the Pacific Scenario at Guadalcanal. So enlist as soon as you can to give these maps a go.

Onigiri

Braving the wilds of action RPGs, Onigiri gives you rare real-time combat experience among established MMOs. And yes, you can finally use that honed fighting game experience here. The added style flare that anime gives just about anything it touches adds uniqueness to the world of Onigiri.

But the most distinct part of Onigiri is the weapons control stat differences and style of play. Instead of pairing class with character, you can easily swap rather than get stuck in a character class.

7

Warframe

Most MMOs push their focus onto PvP since that tends to draw in most players. But Warframe has made the PvE experience a group effort to defeat a common enemy. While not the first game to think of it, it provides a large variety of content for the squad to slash, dash, and fight through.

Warframe: Top 10 Secondary Weapons, Ranked

Warframe has plenty of weapons to choose from, and these secondary weapons are perfect for pairing with the bigger guns!

On its initial launch, one big criticism was that there was too much grinding within Warfame. Many fans will tell new players there are two kinds of gamers: those that can grind and those that can’t. For the hardcore players out there, Warframe will be extremely rewarding. For newbies, don’t worry. Every Tenno has a futuristic ninja suit to make the experience slick and fun.

Star Trek Online

Star Trek Online promotional poster.

Plenty of Trek fans already know about and love Star Trek Online. It does a fantastic job of immersing the player into the franchise and continuing the 24th-century lore (25th as of STO). Star Trek Online allows you to rise through the ranks and take command of your own starship — the dream of many that has now been made possible.

Do bear in mind, if you’ve watched the (excellent) third and final season of Star Trek: Picard (or, technically, any season of Star Trek: Picard), TV Trek has taken the post-Voyager canon in a separate direction, so there won’t be any crossover in that regard. Ditto with Lower Decks and Prodigy; Star Trek Online sees separate futures for the TNG-era shows’ casts.

Eventually, you’ll find yourself in command of a fleet to fulfill the agenda of your chosen side and race. You also get to beam yourself down, take control of your character in the third person, and have a whole array of weapons at your disposal — the perfect mix of strategy and shoot-em-up.

World Of Tanks

World Of Tanks. Three tanks in the photo. Burning smolders of ash across the floor.

Like Ace Combat, PlayStation has been littered with vehicular warfare. But taking the basic shooter games and the extra element of controlling a tank adds a little firepower to the game. World Of Tanks has hundreds of tanks to unlock and tinker with to refresh the grinding pace.

Ranking The Best MMORPGs Of All Time

From the legendary World of Warcraft to EVE Online and Guild Wars 2, here are some of the greatest MMORPGs ever made.

The strategic gamer in you will have no issue planning and executing various co-op maneuvers to defeat the enemy. Couple this with the variety of game modes on offer, and it’s easy to see how World Of Tanks has maintained such a large fan base and competitive scene.

Trove

Trove is a sandbox game that takes the groundwork Minecraft has laid and builds upon it nicely. It’s a fresh enough take to stick with, coming in with brighter colors and focusing on combat. While the class system still applies, you can jump back and forth between the classes and level each one.

The seemingly unending stream of player-created content ensures that you will always have a solid path forward to level and earn rewards. The combination of RPG and sandbox gives a sense of direction in an overwhelming world to explore.

3

Destiny 2

Once a premium game, Destiny 2 has seen some growing pains since Bungie switched from Activision to being an independent agent. But the good news for you is that you can access all year-one content, as well as activities, foundational modes, and rewards for free. Additional content, such as the DLC Beyond Light, will remain on sale for specific prices.

Since the announcement that Destiny 2 would no longer require money to play, many new players have entered the whimsical world of Destiny. If you’ve dedicated a considerable amount of time to the game, you may be looking toward which DLC to buy next. Still, the great thing is that there will always be accessible content, even on the free version. This MMO simply can’t be beaten for the fans of impeccable shooting mechanics.

2

Neverwinter

Based on the gigantic Dungeons & Dragons franchise, Neverwinter carries on the tradition of great storytelling and allows you to control your own fate. With excellent writing and an immersive feel, we wouldn’t fault anyone for sticking on the path laid out for the player. However, it’s advisable to explore the world with other players’ content fully.

There are 15 different races to pick from, each offering its own paths and advantages. Neverwinter truly brings the adventure back to MMOs.

The Elder Scrolls Online weaves the sort of wide-spanning, intricate, lore that only an MMO with years of material can provide; even Morrowind, Oblivion, and Skyrim couldn’t bring so much to the table. It showcases so many places in Tamriel that the mainline games haven’t touched, and it takes place in an important period of The Elder Scrolls’ vast history.

It’s highly single-player friendly, and the storytelling’s pretty neat. Mind you, it’s worth picking up the $14.99 USD subscription if you end up loving the game. Between the free DLCs and the 1,650 “free” Crowns per month (Crowns are premium currency for cosmetics and various upgrades), you’ll get a lot of it.

But it’s best to play the base game’s stories before any of the DLCs, anyway – and you can do so without spending a dime past the initial purchase.

ESO’s on sale fairly often, too!
