Enjoying Japan’s Humble Pleasures

Winter 2025’s Welcome to Japan, Ms. Elf does not focus on food preparation like Restaurant to Another World, but both isekai anime essentially offer similar vibes. Kazuhiro has been visiting a fantasy realm in his sleep for decades, and he tends to hang out with an elf named Marie. For the longest time, he assumed these excursions were dreams, but that changes when he dies while holding Marie and they both wake up on Earth. Learning they can travel back and forth between the two worlds, they decide to experience both cultures to their fullest.

Despite introducing a fantastical world that is, technically filled with endless possibilities, Welcome to Japan, Ms. Elf‘s best segments are the ones set on Earth. Marie’s enthusiasm for Japan’s everyday conveniences and delights is infectious, and she is by far the star of the show. Food is not always the main focus, but it plays a significant role in many episodes as Kazuhiro loves to introduce Marie to the nation’s cuisine and frequently prepares lunches for when they are in the fantasy world.

An Isekai Hero With A Unique Power

Tsuyoshi is summoned to another world to serve as its hero, but he is relieved from his duty when it is revealed his power is, basically, online shopping. Otherwise weak, Tsuyoshi is in a tough spot initially, although that begins to change when he wins over a powerful creature by feeding him excellent food. Before long, the protagonist finds himself armed with two familiars who have bottomless pits for stomachs, and he will need to make good use of his cooking skills to keep them and himself fed.

Campfire Cooking is a charming and refreshing isekai anime that largely plays out like a fantasy slice of life, at least in the chapters that have been adapted so far. While not focusing on an established restaurant, the series explores a wide range of dishes that use ingredients from both Earth and Tsuyoshi’s new home.

Delicious In Dungeon

Turning Monsters Into Food

OK, right out of the gate, it needs to be said that Delicious in Dungeon is nothing like Restaurant to Another World. They are not even in the same ballpark. However, both shows effectively do the same thing for the fantasy genre: give it a cuisine-driven makeover. While Restaurant to Another World provides a slow-life isekai escape where episodes revolve around introducing fantasy characters to Japan’s culinary delights, Delicious in Dungeon is a D&D-style adventure where the protagonists decide to just eat the monsters.

They have an understandable reason for doing so, as they cannot waste time packing and carrying food as they have to quickly descend the dungeon to find a party member who was eaten by a dragon; however, some of the characters also really enjoy the process. And, the anime depicts the cooking process in a fair amount of detail.

Delicious in Dungeon starts as a relatively comedic adventure, before taking a rather dramatic turn about halfway through. The second half of the series is fantastic, but it is not a relaxing, feel-good escape like Restaurant in Another World. Consequently, this recommendation is solely for people who want to see a novel gourmet take on the fantasy genre.

Wagnaria!!

Working At A Family Restaurant

One of the more famous anime about a restaurant, Working!! doesn’t care all that much about the actual jobs of its characters or their customers. Similar to Restaurant to Another World, the focus is mainly on the lives of the workers and the ways their time at the establishment helps them grow.

Restaurant to Another World goes out of its way to show how food can enhance someone’s existence, and the anime doesn’t treat cooking as an afterthought. Working!! doesn’t go down this route, however, its likable cast and humor should strike a chord with fans of the isekai anime.

Japanese Cuisine

A Fate/stay night spin-off, Today’s Menu for the Emiya Family slows things down so that Shirou, Saber, and other Masters and Servants can enjoy the finer (and simpler) things in life. Each episode revolves around Shirou introducing his companions to the endless wonders of food, with the anime typically showing the process of putting together the meals in quite a bit of detail.

Today’s Menu for the Emiya Family is a charming and wholesome slice of life soaked in Japanese culture. The anime’s pacing set it apart from Fate‘s typical releases, and while Today’s Menu for the Emiya Family is hardly a must-watch entry in the franchise, the show is an amusing companion piece to the main seasons.

Four guys run a cute Japanese tea shop called Rokuhoudou; while quite a homely café, the quality of the service and food gradually attracts more visitors. While not completely devoid of an overarching storyline, Yotsuiro Biyori is predominantly a slice of life anime that maintains a gentleness for the majority of its run.

Similar to Restaurant from Another World, Yotsuiro Biyori presents its café as a location for people to soothe their minds and hopefully leave their worries behind. This anime focuses more on the servers than clients, but it does not ignore the latter either.

The definitive reverse isekai series, The Devil is a Part-Timer! hilariously chronicles the trials and tribulations of a demon lord stranded on Earth without much of his powers. Consequently, Sadao Maou takes up a job at MgRonald’s, a fast-food chain inspired by, well, a pretty obvious real-life establishment.

The Devil is a Part-Timer! is first and foremost a comedy, with the anime mining plenty of laughs from its protagonist’s struggles to accumulate to humanity’s conventions. The series’ portrayal of fast-food work is grounded in reality, and this presentation juxtapositions well with the anime’s extraordinary characters. The Devil is a Part-Timer! is not especially similar in tone to Restaurant to Another World, but they both straddle the line between fantasy and reality quite well.

Through a series of unfortunate events and bad decisions not made by herself, Aoi Tsubaki winds up working at an inn for spirits in the Hidden Realm. She has to do this to avoid marrying the inn’s owner, Oodanna, an ogre who is owed a lot of money by Aoi’s recently deceased grandfather. Aoi uses her talent for cooking to feed spirits and regain her freedom.

Kakuriyo: Bed & Breakfast for Spirits‘ premise suggests a romance, and while that is part of the equation, the anime is more preoccupied with its cuisine and rotating cast of customers. A fun series about food’s power to bring humans and mythological creatures together, this anime is charming.

After work, Kobayashi likes to go out for a few drinks to relax. One day, this excursion leads a drunk Kobayashi into the path of an injured dragon, whom the human decides to help. Long story short, Kobayashi now lives with multiple dragons. Sometimes life is just full of surprises.

Mostly free of tension, Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid is a pleasant comedy about the unique friendships that form between Kobayashi and her new companions. The reverse isekai anime strikes a similar balance of humor, sincerity, and flashes of maturity as Restaurant to Another World.

Largely set in Tootsuki Culinary Academy, the series revolves around the students’ attempts to discover their personal (cooking) voices, with the earliest seasons focusing quite heavily on the actual food preparation.

A shonen anime, Food Wars! has tournaments, villains, wacky humor, and a confident protagonist striving to be the best. This anime’s title says it all. Bartender is about Eden Hall, a bar that just has a way of finding those who are in need of a good cocktail and perhaps someone to talk to. That person comes in the form of Ryuu Sasakura, a bartender who knows his way around a drink better than anyone.

Restaurant to Another World shines the spotlight on the titular establishment’s customers regularly, and Bartender does the same thing but to even more of a degree. Through these cocktails and conversations, the anime explores the many challenges faced by people. At times, this show is powerful.

Sweetness & Lightning tells a heartwarming story about family, compromise, and love. In this anime, cooking helps bring together people who otherwise have trouble opening a line of communication.

Very Similar Premise

Isekai Izakaya: Japanese Food From Another World‘s premise is strikingly similar to Restaurant to Another World; Nobu is a bar that serves food and drinks to people from a whole other realm. Similarities aside, these two shows do enough to stand on their own. Isekai Shokudou constantly shuffles through different characters, with each episode bringing someone new to the plate. This allows the anime to explore various backgrounds and fantasy races.

Isekai Izakaya is more preoccupied with its recurring characters, mainly those who work at Nobu, than Restaurant to Another World. As such, this anime is less episodic than Isekai Shokudou; that said, the shows do have somewhat similar tones and move at the same pace, so a fan of one is likely to enjoy the other. They are just not cut from the exact same cloth as their premises might suggest.
