Summary

  • Square Enix is rumored to be prioritizing Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Rebirth for the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2.
  • Final Fantasy 16 is supposedly not planned for Switch 2 at this time.

It seems as though both Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth are coming to the Nintendo Switch 2. There haven’t been many games announced for the Nintendo Switch 2 yet, but with the console’s release expected within a matter of months, chances are the announcements will start coming sooner rather than later.

Nintendo itself has announced a Switch 2 Direct to take place on Wednesday, April 2. The Switch 2 Direct is expected to confirm the console’s release date, price, and launch games. After that point, it’s likely that Nintendo’s third-party partners will start announcing games for the Switch 2, with Square Enix among them.

Nintendo Switch 2 Could Receive One of 2025’s Biggest Games

A recent comment from a well-known industry executive suggests that one of 2025’s biggest releases could make its way to the Nintendo Switch 2.

Square Enix has not announced any Switch 2 games just yet, but a recent leak suggests that the company is going to release both Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth for the home console/handheld hybrid. This leak comes courtesy of NateDrake, aka Nate the Hate, who has accurately leaked Switch 2 news in the past. According to their info, as posted on Resetera, Square Enix is prioritizing Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Rebirth for Switch 2, with no plans to bring Final Fantasy 16 to the platform at this time.

FF7 Remake and Rebirth Rumored for Switch 2

Final Fantasy 16 sales weren’t as strong as expected, so it seems somewhat surprising that Square Enix wouldn’t want to get it on the Switch 2. However, it also makes a great deal of sense to focus on more surefire hits like Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Rebirth. Final Fantasy 7 remains the most popular iteration of the franchise, and so it stands to reason that the remake games would do very well on the Switch 2.

If Square Enix is bringing Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Rebirth to the Switch 2 as rumored, it gives us a better idea of the console’s capabilities. It seems that the Switch 2 may be more powerful than some expect, though it’s possible that there will be major concessions to get the games running on Nintendo’s new console. Ultimately, fans won’t know for sure until they see Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Rebirth running on the Switch 2 for themselves, and there’s no telling when that might happen.

As far as games that have actually been announced for the Switch 2, there have been some indie titles confirmed for the platform. Nintendo has so far only announced a new Mario Kart game for the Switch 2, but plenty more titles should be revealed during the April 2 Nintendo Switch 2 Direct event.
