The future of the God of War franchise has been a prominent subject in gaming since its last entry, Ragnarok, hit the scene back in 2022. God of War has continued to be one of Sony’s most popular franchises, and many want to know where it’s headed next. There are plenty of theories suggesting an Atreus-led spin-off or the series switching to the Egyptian pantheon, but developer Santa Monica Studio has yet to confirm anything.
Equally exciting, God of War is about to celebrate its 20th anniversary, leaving room for potential announcements about the franchise’s future plans. While God of War has been one of the leaders of Sony’s action adventure roster, the Horizon franchise has also grown into a staple series that the company is determined to grow. One of the most recent spin-offs of the Horizon series was last year’s LEGO Horizon Adventures. Although the game didn’t perform as well as Sony had hoped, it may open the door for more LEGO crossovers, and if so, God of War would be the perfect franchise for round two.

Horizon May Have Not Been the Best Fit For LEGO
The Horizon series has been quite successful for Sony, but God of War has the mechanics and a world that could translate to a LEGO adaptation incredibly well. Both Horizon and God of War boast serious tones, which LEGO games definitely do not, but the character dynamics of the latter could prove to be a far better match for another team-up with the toy company. LEGO Horizon Adventures was a bold risk, but it unfortunately didn’t stick the landing. The game launched to heavily mixed reviews, which might make any future Sony collaborations with LEGO difficult.
However, if the company wants to take the leap one more time, God of War may have what it takes to see Sony’s LEGO aspirations through. Imagining Kratos’ stoic nature with Atreus’ snark could be really fun showcased through the LEGO lens, as it could turn the father and son duo into somewhat of a buddy cop relationship. The relationship between Kratos and Atreus has been the heart of the franchise’s new era, and seeing a more lighthearted take could be incredibly entertaining. Kratos and Atreus aren’t the only characters who would be ideal for LEGO adaptations, either.

- Brok
- Sindri
- Norse pantheon
- Greek pantheon
A LEGO spin-off game that combines both the Ancient Greek and Norse eras into one showdown may be an exciting route to follow. Seeing Zeus and Odin go head-to-head while Mimir makes sarcastic remarks isn’t that hard to imagine. Character personalities aside, though, the combat formula of the LEGO games is where a hypothetical God of War adaptation might really shine.
God of War and the Horizon franchise are both set to get live-action adaptations, the former a TV series and the latter a movie.
LEGO’s Beat-Em-Up Mechanics Are Perfect For God of War
Through the years, LEGO has focused on a specific combat loop. Granted, the combat in LEGO Horizon Adventures was quite fun, but God of War would simply have more to offer in terms of diversity. Kratos’ Blades of Chaos in LEGO form is a thrilling idea, and the character’s knack for hacking and slashing through enemies would likely feel a lot more satisfying.
God of War is about to celebrate its 20th anniversary, leaving room for potential announcements about the franchise’s future plans.
After the lackluster performance of LEGO Horizon Adventures, it remains to be seen if Sony will lend another one of its franchises to LEGO. As of now, there is no way to know for sure, but if Sony gets the itch to collaborate a second time, God of War is the ideal candidate.
