This article contains spoilers for One Piece’s Elbaf Arc.
Summary
- Only a few weapons in One Piece have been given Devil Fruits.
- A new chapter introduces an incredible weapon with a Zoan Devil Fruit.
- More exploration of weapons with Devil Fruits is desired, but too many may detract from their uniqueness.
- Character count of each key takeaway:
One Piece is full of bizarre and interesting concepts that set it apart from other anime and manga. Ranging from wacky, cartoonish powers to characters who have ridiculous sizes and proportions, the weirdness of One Piece is one of the things that makes the series so special. Without the massive amount of strange abilities and illogical concepts, One Piece would hardly be the same series it is today.
Throughout the series, one of the weirdest, yet most interesting abilities, that has been introduced to One Piece is the concept of inanimate objects eating Devil Fruits. Although this idea doesn’t make sense logically, it has produced the most interesting concepts in the series, including a new incredibly powerful sword in One Piece’s Elbaf Arc. However, this concept seems to be underutilized and hasn’t been explored to its full limits with very few weapons, with Devil Fruits being introduced throughout One Piece.

There Have Only Been A Few Weapons With Devil Fruits In One Piece
A New Chapter Introduces Another Amazing One
Through the miraculous science of the One Piece character, Vegapunk developed a way to feed a Devil Fruit to an inanimate object. Specifically, by feeding something a Zoan Devil Fruit, it fundamentally brings the object to life, giving the weapon a mind of its own and various Zoan abilities. Although fans don’t know directly how this happens, many are convinced that this has to do with Vegapunk’s research on One Piece’s Lineage Factor.
All right, good boy. – Spandam to Funkfreed
So far, only three weapons have been given Devil Fruits in the canon series of One Piece, although more inanimate objects have been given Devil Fruits. Firstly, Mr. 4’s bazooka, Lassoo, was given the Dog-Dog Fruit Model: Dachshund, allowing it to move on its own and sneeze out explosive baseballs. Next, Spandam’s sword, Funkfreed, was given the Elephant-Elephant Fruit, allowing it to transform into an elephant to defend the weak former CP9 leader. Finally, Chapter 1138 of One Piece introduces Shamrock’s sword, Cerberus, which has consumed an unnamed Mythical Zoan Devil Fruit that likely shares the same name.
Weapons With Devil Fruits Should Be Explored More
These Weapons Could Have Other Kinds Of Devil Fruits
- There Are More Tactics And Applications Of Weapons With Devil Fruits To Explore
- Other Devil Fruits May Be Interesting To See With Weapons
While this concept has only been used three times throughout the canon series of One Piece, giving a weapon a Devil Fruit is something that should be explored more. This concept provides an interesting way for characters to utilize Devil Fruit-like abilities, without becoming Devil Fruit users themselves. Additionally, it opens a whole new world of creative attacks that utilize the advantages of having a living weapon, such as when Shanks’s twin in One Piece, Shamrock, issues specific commands to his weapon when attacking Loki. Although this may be too much, maybe each non-Devil Fruit user of the Holy Knights possesses a weapon similar to Cerberus, to make up for their lack of powers.

One Piece: How The Bounty System Has Been Wrong So Far
While the Bounty System in One Piece is interesting, it has failed in the past.
At the same time, while it makes sense that only Zoan Devil Fruits in One Piece have been fed to inanimate objects, since it gives them some level of sentience, it would also be interesting to see the effect that other Devil Fruits have on weapons. Although it may be unlikely, it is possible that feeding something like One Piece’s Ice-Ice Fruit to a sword would make a weapon that freezes anything it touches and is impossible to break. However, due to the complications that may arise in trying to logically apply the powers of Paramecia and Logia Devil Fruits to weapons, it makes sense why Oda decided to leave them out.
Having Too Many Weapons With Devil Fruits May Take Way From The Charm
Weapons With Devil Fruits Are Unique Because Of How Few Of Them There Are
Still, the only downside of introducing more is that it takes away from the allure of having so few weapons with Devil Fruits in One Piece. If weapons with Devil Fruits become oversaturated, they may not feel as unique and interesting as they once were. Similarly, if all the questions and mysteries surrounding weapons with Devil Fruits are answered, fans may become bored with the concept.
You do it, Cerberus. – Shamrock
In the end, despite the potential downsides, it would be interesting to see a few more weapons with Devil Fruits introduced before the end of One Piece. There are plenty of unexplored ideas about these weapons, including the use of other kinds of Devil Fruits and more. With the introduction of Cerberus to One Piece, at the very least, Oda reminds fans that weapons with Devil Fruits are not a forgotten concept.
