The worst-rated Resident Evil game on Steam is being shut down, pulled from sale

Capcom has been trying to make multiplayer Resident Evil work for more than 20 years now. It started in 2003 with RE Outbreak – flawed and fussy, that first attempt remains, weirdly, the most convincing co-op Resident Evil game in history. Operation Raccoon City wasn’t very good at all. After that it was RE Resistance, and then Resident Evil ReVerse. Every game puts a different spin on multiplayer survival horror, but none of them, despite Capcom’s best efforts, has ever taken off. Maybe a good multiplayer Resident Evil could still happen, but for now, ReVerse, originally launched alongside Village, is done for – the worst-rated RE game on Steam, it’s being shut down and pulled from sale.

It was a solid idea. In Resident Evil ReVerse, you pick either your favorite hero or monster from the survival horror game and then fight against other players in maps based on the RPD, Raccoon City, and other iconic locales. But as of this writing, ReVerse is the single worst-rated RE game on all of Steam, based on user reviews – even the similarly maligned RE Resistance has a better score, 38% positive to ReVerse’s 35%. If you never played it and you wanted to give it a shot, just to see what all the non fuss is about, you’d better get going.

On Monday March 3, Resident Evil ReVerse will be removed from sale, meaning it will no longer be available to purchase or download. If you still own the game after that, you will be able to play ReVerse until 23:59 PST on Sunday June 29, when Capcom will take the servers offline, shutting the game down for good.

“Resident Evil ReVerse was developed in celebration of the 25th anniversary of the Resident Evil series, and your overwhelming support for the game has far exceeded our expectations since the time of its release,” Capcom says. “Now that we’ve reached a new turning point for the series, we feel that Resident Evil ReVerse has served its original, celebratory purpose admirably.

“We are incredibly grateful for your warm support for Resident Evil ReVerse, and we deeply apologize for bringing you this disappointing news.”

Personally, I’m curious about this “turning point” to which Capcom refers. Is this a sly hint that something new is about to happen in the Resident Evil world? We’ve heard rumors about RE9, or maybe a remake of Code Veronica. The remake of Resident Evil 1 has also just gotten a surprise update on Steam. We’ll just have to see. But in the meantime, if you want to play or replay ReVerse, be aware that the clock is ticking.

Try some of the other best survival games, or maybe the best zombie games on PC.
