It’s been a rough landing for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 on PC. The port of Insomniac’s web-slinging open-world game landed on Steam one week ago to a rather tepid reception. As it looks to solve the most pressing problems, Nixxes, the developer of the PC version, has released its first post-launch patch. The update aims to tackle some of the most serious issues preventing players from living out their superhero fantasies, while also improving crash reporting for the future.
The launch response to Spider-Man 2 on Steam was so overwhelming that it marked a new low for PlayStation-published games on the platform. Things have recovered marginally since then, but its 63%-positive user score means that the open-world game is still a long way from escaping the dreaded ‘mixed’ rating. Chief among the complaints mentioned in reviews are crashes during startup, framerate struggles and drops, and graphical artifacts causing missing textures during cutscenes.
Hopefully, the arrival of this first patch should help. Spider-Man 2 patch 1 kicks things off with “several crash fixes based on feedback from many of you and our crash reporting system.” This tool has also been updated, allowing screenshots to be submitted alongside crash reports, which developer Nixxes says “will give us additional insights into where issues occur frequently in the game” as it looks to make further improvements.

Alongside this, the update also includes fixes for several of the most dramatic visual bugs, a new backup system for autosaves at “key points in the story,” improvements to make starting New Game Plus easier, and the ability to scroll in the save and load menus. You can also now toggle the ‘film style animation’ and ‘comic SFX’ effects from the menu under ‘settings > game > camera’ once you’ve unlocked the Across the Spider-Verse suit.
Settings for UI scaling features including subtitle text size, icon size, and audio listening mode will no longer be synchronized between different devices. That’s handy if you’re spending some of your time on a smaller screen, although note that this change means they’ll be reset to their defaults with the update.
