Summary

  • Sony is considering featuring a new Marvel character after Tom Holland’s Spider-Man.
  • Miles Morales may be introduced in future Spider-Man films after Holland’s Peter Parker.
  • Sony needs to carefully cast and tell the story of Miles to achieve the same success as Holland’s Spider-Man.

Sony owns the rights to Spider-Man and the company is reportedly likely to feature another Marvel character after Tom Holland’s stint as Peter Parker. Although Holland’s Spider-Man is a massive hit, the other films from Sony aren’t as successful.

Sony acquired the movie rights to Spider-Man in 1999 before Marvel Studios was founded. They also produced Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man trilogy (2002 – 2007) and Andrew Garfield’s two Spidey movies (2012-2014). Sony has a special agreement with Marvel Studios, allowing Spider-Man to appear in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Sony is developing its own Spider-Man universe and has released films associated with the character, including Venom, Morbius, Kraven the Hunter, and Madame Web. These films aren’t officially part of the MCU, and they received mixed to poor receptions, critically and commercially. Thus, it’s unsurprising that Sony is reportedly planning to work on another Spider-Man film with a different character after Holland’s Peter Parker.

RUMOR: Spider-Man 4 To Feature Peter Parker Teaming Up With This Anti-Hero Against Hulk

Spider-Man will reportedly join forces with an anti-hero in Spider-Man 4 to beat Hulk.

Movie insider Alex Perez spoke about the MCU films and Marvel comics in a recent Q&A. He was asked about Disney Plus’ series Young Avengers allegedly being renamed to Champions and whether it will feature Miles Morales. While Perez agreed changing the title to Champions since it’s a “better fit for the name than Young Avengers,” he said it was unlikely for Miles to join the series because the character is rumored to have his own projects. “Miles won’t be a part of the Champions lineup, and neither will Nova (Sam Alexander),” Perez explained (via The Cosmic Circus). “Reasons why, is Miles (according to information I currently have, so please take this with a grain of salt) is going to be set in a rebooted Sony Universe that’s set to be established after Secret Wars.”

Miles Morales is a character from Marvel Comics who takes on the mantle of Spider-Man after Peter Parker. He was introduced in Ultimate Fallout #4 (2011). Miles is an Afro–Puerto Rican teenager with an African-American dad and an Afro-Puerto Rican mom. He’s the second Spider-Man featured in the Ultimate Marvel. If Sony plans to feature him next, they could introduce him in Holland’s next film. Holland has expressed interest in getting the character in his movies. “If I would be lucky enough to somehow bring Miles Morales into my Spider-Man universe and into the MCU, I’d love to do for a young kid what [Robert] Downey [Jr.] did for me,” the Avengers: Endgame star previously said. Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man served as Spider-Man’s mentor and father figure in the MCU.

Introducing Miles Morales in a live-action movie adaptation could be a strategic move for Sony since the character is really popular. However, they still need to consider the casting and storytelling. Holland’s casting is one of the best parts of his Spider-Man films because the audience loves him, and they embrace him fully in his superhero persona. In fact, he was only set to star in a trilogy, but due to the success of No Way Home, Marvel and Sony decided to work with him again for Spider-Man 4. Also, if Sony features Miles next, it remains unclear if they will still work with Marvel Studios on it. Perhaps they should because their projects with Marvel perform better critically and commercially.
