Known simply as the Chick Pokemon, Torchic first appeared in Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire. Torchic is the Fire-type Starter Pokemon of the Hoenn region, with its counterparts being Treecko and Mudkip. Torchic evolves into Combusken and then Blaziken via level ups, and gains the Fighting type as its secondary type upon evolution. Torchic is known for its adorable orange body with yellow feathers, and a tendency to stand on one leg rather than two. Torchic can be obtained in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet via The Indigo Disk DLC, as it can be found wandering the Terarium’s upgraded Polar Biome.

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet Players Shocked by Corviknight’s Size
A Pokemon Scarlet and Violet player shares their surprise at how big their Corviknight is, impressing fellow fans of the game.
Although Torchic remains a popular Starter Pokemon with distinct features, one trainer noted how some Pokemon have small differences that can go unnoticed. On the r/PokemonScarletViolet subreddit, a Redditor named Soyuu96 shared a screenshot of their Torchic and observed a small, dark spot on the Chick Pokemon’s back. Soyuu96 stated they took the picture while Shiny Hunting in Pokemon Violet and drew a circle to the right of Torchic’s stubby tail to indicate where the dark spot was. Given that Pokemon Scarlet and Violet have had performance issues since release, Soyuu96 wondered if the dark spot near Torchic’s tail was a mistake in rendering its model, and then asked other trainers if they noticed similar mistakes in Pokemon designs.
Pokemon Fan Notes The Dark Spot On Their Torchic
In response, some Pokemon trainers commented that Torchic’s dark spot near its tail was an indicator of sexual dimorphism that was exclusive to the male Torchic. In turn, female Torchic do not have this spot on their bodies. Another fan claimed that Torchic’s spot was also a reference to one part of its origins, namely to the methods real-world farmers used to determine the gender of a chicken. Given that male Torchic outnumber females at a rate of seven to one, other Pokemon fans replied that the differences can go mostly unnoticed.
While Pokemon like Pikachu have distinct differences between the male and female forms, others like Torchic are designed with more subtle traits. With Pokemon Legends: Z-A in the works, it remains to be seen what future Pokemon designs will have gender-based differences.
