Megumi Ishitani said she came up with the idea for the One Piece Fan Letter in Summer 2024. She was brainstorming a project for the 25th anniversary of the One Piece anime. After a while, she settled on the idea that she would create a special to commemorate the anniversary. However, she was unsure how she would go about creating it. In the interview, she also explains how she recruited the staff members for the project.
Anyone can come up with a story, but there aren’t many screenwriters who can structure it so that the most important themes get across to the audience. She was able to do that.
