This article contains spoilers from One Piece’s Elbaf arc.

Summary

  • Both Shanks and Corazon come from Celestial Dragon families, rejecting their roots.
  • Shanks and Corazon both stole Devil Fruits and gave them to kids, making major sacrifices.
  • Luffy and Law carry on the will of their benefactors, looking up to them and aiming to make them proud.

Shanks is one of the most important characters in One Piece, and when it comes to Luffy, he’s his biggest idol. Right from the very beginning, Luffy made it clear that he wanted to be just like Shanks and even go on to surpass him. Shanks served as a proper figure for Luffy to look up to in life and follow in the footsteps of. However, Shanks is only one of the many incredible benefactors in One Piece that Oda has introduced in his story.

Another such figure is Donquixote Rosinante, also known as Corazon in One Piece. Both Shanks and Corazon are beloved One Piece characters, but that isn’t the only thing that they’re similar in. Surprisingly enough, Corazon and Shanks have many things in common, and some that might even tell the fans what the future holds in store for the Red-Haired Emperor.

The Celestial Lineage Of Shanks And Corazon

  • Both Shanks And Corazon Come From Celestial Dragon Families
  • Both Reject Their Respective Family

If there’s one thing that stood out about Corazon in One Piece, it is the fact that he was a unique type of Celestial Dragon. Corazon was introduced to the fans in a flashback in One Piece, and it was revealed that he was the brother of Donquixote Doflamingo, making him a former Celestial Dragon as well. Both Corazon and Doflamingo lived atop the Red Line in the Holy Land of Marijoa, yet when their father, Donquixote Homing, decided to step down and live on the surface with the rest of the humans, they had to follow him. They both lived a terrible life on the surface, but what was shocking was the fact that Donquixote Rosinante was unlike any other Celestial Dragon that fans had seen up until this point in the story. Rosinante was kind.

Live, Law! There is nothing to bind you or hold you back anymore. — Rosinante

Comparing him to Shanks, there are quite a lot of things that are common between them, with one of them being the fact that they both share Celestial Dragon blood. Just like Corazon is from the Donquixote Family of the Celestial Dragons, Shanks is from the Figarland family, which was confirmed in the story rather recently. More than that, just like Doflamingo, Shanks is a kind-hearted Celestial Dragon. The two have various reasons for being the people they are today. For Shanks, it was Scopper Gaban who accidentally got him to Oro Jackson, and the Roger Pirates who raised him. For Corazon, it was Sengoku who found him and then went on to raise him. This is certainly an interesting connection, but this isn’t all.

Both Corazon and Shanks have siblings, and both of them are the younger siblings in their respective families. Corazon had an older brother named Doflamingo, which fans are very well aware of, given that he was one of the biggest villains in the story, Shanks also has an older brother, who goes by the name of Shamrock. The only difference is that Corazon was not Doflamingo’s twin, while Shanks is a part of twins.

Devil Fruits And The Celestial Dragons

Both Corazon and Shanks Stole Devil Fruits

Although a few similarities have already been established between Shanks and Doflamingo, there is definitely more that ties these two characters together. For one, both Shanks and Doflamingo stole Devil Fruits at one point in their lives. Shanks stole the Gomu Gomu no Mi 12 years ago, and he kept the Devil Fruit with him. In Wano, it was revealed to the fans that the Gomu Gomu no Mi was on a Government vessel, and that the World Government wanted to seize this fruit desperately. Who’s Who was the one guarding it and he failed his mission when the Red Hair Pirates attacked him. Shanks took the Devil Fruit, and eventually, Luffy went on to eat it.

Meanwhile, Corazon’s case was somewhat similar as well. He ended up stealing the Ope Ope no Mi, which was also going to go to either the Marines, or Doflamingo himself. Corazon used his immense power to sneak into the trading unit and successfully secure the Devil Fruit. He then managed to run away, even though he got injured while doing so.

Unsurprisingly, both Shanks and Corazon ended up giving the Devil Fruit to a kid in their lives. Luffy consumed the Devil Fruit without Shanks knowing at first, but did so nonetheless. Meanwhile, Law consumed the Devil Fruit from Corazon’s own hands. If that wasn’t enough, the n yet another parallel between the two is that they both made a major sacrifice for the kids. Shanks gave up his left arm to the Sea King to protect Luffy from certain death. Corazon gave up his life to protect Law from certain death.

How Luffy and Law Carry Shanks And Corazon’s Will

Both Luffy and Law Look Up To Their Benefactors

While Corazon may be dead, Law clearly looks up to him still, and everything that he accomplished over the course of the last 13 years has been for him. Law even inherited Corazon’s dream and wants to find out the true meaning of the checkered fate of the D. Meanwhile, Luffy was Inspired heavily by Shanks and the only reason he even wants to become the Pirate King is because of him. Luffy and Law both admire their respective benefactors and want to be like them in many ways. In other words, both of them carry the will of the one who saved their life and want to do them proud in life moving forward.

It’s just an arm, I’m glad you’re okay. — Shanks to Luffy

Interestingly enough, Corazon ended up dying after making a massive sacrifice for Law, but Shanks survived having his arm torn from him by the Lord of the Coast. Could this potentially be indicating a predicament that Shanks could face later down the line where he’ll have to sacrifice his life to protect Luffy? Perhaps. Only time can tell. For now, what can be said for sure is that Oda writes these two characters in a fascinating way and they are very similar to each other, mirroring one another from top to bottom. Perhaps this is also why Oda had Luffy and Law become friends, and why they played a very important role in changing the tides of the era in the New World. Fans absolutely love Oda’s many small parallels, and hopefully, this will continue in the future of the story as well.

corazon gut wrenching quotes in one piece

For now, Shanks is the focal point of the Final Saga and a major player here, and fans absolutely cannot wait to see what Oda has in store for the Red-haired Emperor here, with Luffy already having almost come face-to-face with his elder brother, Shamrock Figarland.
