Helldivers 2's Biggest Plot Device is Seemingly One Big Misdirect Now

While Helldivers 2 has no regular story mode, it does have a progressive narrative that Arrowhead Game Studios continually updates. The arrival of the Illuminate is the game’s recent way of showing that, as the faction’s actions since its return seem to indicate many interesting things to come. But as entertaining and exciting as that may be, one has to wonder about a previous plot device that was also meant to have huge implications for Helldivers 2 but has yet to amount to anything.

On May 30, 2024, Helldivers 2 saw the destruction of Meridia after players injected the planet with Dark Fluid to destroy the Terminid Super Colony overrunning it. This resulted in a beautiful, purple, black hole that fans speculated that its appearance was the game’s way of teasing them about future content. Arrowhead Game Studios has not done anything with it since it was introduced, making the situation rather unfortunate as it could have been a way for the developer to introduce new and interesting content. Considering nothing has been done with the black hole since its appearance, it can make one wonder about the missed opportunities it could have been used for.

Developer Arrowhead Game Studios announces new War Bond DLC for Helldivers 2 that adds a massive new stratagem for players to use.

What Fans Expected Helldivers 2’s Black Hole to Introduce to the Game

After completing a major order of Helldivers 2 that resulted in the emergence of a black hole, it’s understandable that fans expected it to lead to something even greater. Unfortunately, that was not the case, and it is a shame as it could have been used to do things such as:

  • Introduce a way for players to enter a new galaxy to explore and defend from the opposition, increasing the number of levels there would be and potentially offering more diversity in mission variety
  • To be used as a way for a new faction to enter the scene, introducing fans of the game to a threat that can offer new experiences, keeping combat and gameplay fresh
  • Act as a gateway for the new and old units of the Illuminate faction, reintroducing the previous game’s threat in a grand way that fans could have easily accepted given the means it was done so

All these would have made the black hole a huge deal and could have given players a memory that would last even after they no longer continue playing the game. While that may not be the case now, perhaps Arrowhead Game Studios could still do something big with it in the near future.

How the Black Hole Can Still Make It Up to Fans of Helldivers 2

While Helldivers 2 was one of the top-selling games of 2024, it could have seen even more success if it capitalized on what it could have done with the black hole. Still, that doesn’t mean the opportunity is lost, as Arrowhead Game Studios seem to be doing something with it, given that the Illuminate faction is advancing towards its location. Considering that little to nothing was done with the black hole last year, being involved in a new plotline is a chance to redeem what could have been. The developer can use it to do things like having it act as a tool for the Illuminate to threaten Super Earth, where missions can take place on the planet where the whole narrative is centered around. If not, it could be used by the faction to introduce another threat or to evolve the current ones, greatly enhancing one’s playing experience. Hopefully, Arrowhead Game Studios considers such ideas, as they can only benefit Helldivers 2.

The black hole may not have amounted to anything, but that does not mean it will continue to do so, especially given the recent development revolving around it. If there is one thing to hope for from Helldivers 2 in 2025, it’s that Arrowhead Game Studios will finally use it as a plot device for an update containing amazing content that will make its way into the game.
