The Silver Surfer Is Missing From The Fantastic Four: First Steps Trailer

Shalla-Bal Silver Surfer

Marvel showcased all four members of the Fantastic Four in this trailer, which is something that was to be expected. The trailer also gave a glimpse of Galactus; the Silver Surfer was nowhere to be seen. The character is going to be played by Julia Garner, bringing a female version, often known as Sahlla-Bal, to the big screen. The character usually has a significant role in Galactus-related stories. Therefore, there was an expectation amongst most people that the character would appear in some form.

The decision not to include the Silver Surfer didn’t hurt the trailer in a negative way because many people don’t even know the character is going to be included. But for those who do know, it painted a worrying picture for Silver Surfer’s Marvel future before the character has even debuted in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and that isn’t a good sign.

Fans Are Worried About Potential VFX Problems

Fantastic Four First Steps Reed Richards

Because of the nature of the Silver Surfer’s overall look and powers, there are going to be plenty of visual effects involved in the character. The fact that she’s absent from the trailer has led to people being concerned that the visuals aren’t looking good at the moment, which led to Marvel Studios opting not to include the character. The Thing did appear, and the CGI involved in that has left people divided as to how they feel about it; therefore, there could have been a decision that adding another character heavily using those effects might be too much.

The stretching powers of Mister Fantastic were also absent from the trailer, which many felt was a strange decision. Sue Storm and Johnny Storm’s abilities were highlighted, while Ben Grimm was shown in complete rock form; therefore, not highlighting what Richard Reed could do certainly stood out. However, that has only pushed the idea that the production team could be having some issues with the visuals in this movie. There is still time for them to be worked on in post-production, and that might be why they were neglected in this trailer.

People Are Worried About The Silver Surfer’s Future Within The Fantastic Four: First Steps

Fantastic Four First Steps Astronauts-1

While Marvel could be looking to hold something back for future trailers in a bid not to give everything away at once, not showcasing one of the key characters in the movie feels like a misstep. Fans want to see what they will be getting themselves in for when heading to the cinema, and a character as visually striking as the Silver Surfer would undoubtedly have caught the attention of audiences. While comic book fans will be well aware that the character is coming, for casual fans who don’t know everything about this franchise, seeing the Silver Surfer flying around would have excited people when they were watching the trailer.

Marvel wants to create as much buzz as possible for The Fantastic Four: First Steps and Silver Surfer would only have aided that situation. The fact that Garner’s character didn’t pop up has left people wondering how much of a role she will have in the film. The lack of trailer content could be because Silver Surfer is only used sparingly, with Marvel potentially deciding to focus firmly on Galactus and the Fantastic Four. That would be a disappointing decision because the Silver Surfer can add a lot to a movie like this and would create a different dynamic for the Fantastic Four to deal with compared to the gigantic villain they’re tackling in Galactus.

There isn’t going to be panic stations just yet due to how early on in the process this is for The Fantastic Four: First Steps. However, neglecting the Silver Surfer is something that has got people worried about the character’s overall future within the MCU, even if Marvel is holding things back to create further selling points down the line. Patience isn’t something that MCU fans have, especially when it comes to a movie as highly anticipated as this. Therefore, more content would’ve been a wiser decision to appease the audience that has been waiting for this movie for a long time. It’s unknown at this stage when the next trailer for The Fantastic Four: First Steps will drop, but hopefully, that will feature the Silver Surfer, or the concerns will only rise.
