The 2025 Esports World Cup is expanding its reach as it adds FATAL FURY: City of Wolves to its line-up of EWC games. The unreleased fighting game and latest entry in SNK’s legendary franchise will join EWC’s suite of over 20 titles this summer in Riyadh.
Unveiled by release earlier today, FATAL FURY: City of Wolves inclusion in the EWC comes as a surprise – partly because of its unreleased status (It’s schedule for full release in April this year), and partly due to it now going head to head with some of the EWC’s other fighting game titles.
FATAL FURY’s Latest Entry Heads To The EWC
One of the defining games that contributed to the growth of the fighting game genre, SNK’s Fatal Fury is celebrating the release of its first new entry since 1999 (!).
“FATAL FURY is a cornerstone of fighting game history, a franchise that helped ignite the competitive spirit of the 1990s arcade boom and set the stage for the genre’s mainstream revolution,” said Fabian Scheuermann, Chief Games Officer, Esports World Cup Foundation.
“As fighting games and retro titles experience a global resurgence, fueled by nostalgia, competitive depth, and community-driven passion, we are thrilled to partner with SNK for the next three years to bring this legendary series to the Esports World Cup stage. Together, we aim to reignite FATAL FURY’s competitive legacy by introducing it to a new generation of players and fans, elevating its place in the world of esports and supporting the growth of competitive gaming as a truly global sport.”
SNK’s CEO, Kenji Matsubara, also weighed in on FATAL FURY: City of Wolves’s inclusion in the EWC:
“This partnership marks a historic milestone for FATAL FURY, a title loved around the world for 30 years, as it steps into the competitive gaming arena.”
“The Esports World Cup provides the perfect platform to showcase the franchise’s enduring legacy while engaging a new generation of fans, including those watching the great fights live in Riyadh arenas and on screens around the world.”
We’ve already predicted that FATAL FURY: City of Wolves will be one of the biggest new esports games of 2025 when it releases. With its inclusion in the EWC, that prediction is only becoming more accurate.
The Esports World Cup, set to be held this summer in Riyadh, is organized by the Savvy Gaming Group, a wholly owned part of the Saudi Arabian PIF, the sovereign wealth fund of the Saudi Arabian State.
