Summary

  • The next Battlefield title is a real thing, and four EA studios are coming together to help launch it.
  • As part of the game’s rollout, players are being solicited to help shape the Battlefield experience via playtests.
  • The sign-ups for those playtests are now live, and, at one point, over 1.3 million people were queued up.

Earlier this week, Electronic Arts finally broke its silence when it comes to the future of the Battlefield first-person shooter franchise. As part of a five-minute reveal, EA revealed that four studios are coming together to form Battlefield Labs, with DICE, Motive, Ripple Effect and Criterion all joining forces. As a result, Need for Speed will be put on ice as Criterion works specifically on the game’s campaign.

Additionally, in an effort to avoid another disastrous launch, EA is soliciting fans to sign-up for playtests in order for fans to help “build Battlefield together.” With that, players will be able to experience parts of the game’s combat, destruction and other features with the ability to provide first-hand feedback. Those sign-ups are currently available and now, and via a new report, it appears that more than a handful of players want to be part of it.

Battlefield Still Has Devoted Fans

As first spotted by MP1st, it appears that, at one point, over 1.3 million people attempted to sign up for the chance to test out the next game. That figure comes from content creator TacticalBrit, who shared on Twitter their spot in the queue.

In an effort to mitigate any problems, the official Battlefield Twitter account noted that the initial survey questions have now been eliminated and that it is actively working to improve the overall sign-up experience ahead of the first official playtests, which will be in “the coming weeks.”

As it stands, the next Battlefield title is expected at some point within the next year (April 1, 2025–March 31, 2026), according to EA earnings reports. That means Battlefield could be as far as a year off. Still, if the sign-up numbers are any indication, despite the misfortunes of previous Battlefield titles, it appears that there is still an appetite for the franchise.
