I’ve already called Voin a ‘boomer slasher,’ and with the benefit of hindsight, I think it fits the game quite well. On the one hand, it’s got the pace, frantic combat, and action of a shooter like Doom, but on the other, it has the methodical swordplay of the soulslike genre. You’ve also got to explore, find upgrades, and hone your skills while hacking your enemies to pieces, and all of this comes together into a Steam Early Access experience with loads of promise. Solo developer Nikita Sozidar has just released Voin’s first major update, too, and it makes everything better.
Between the tense first-person fights to the death, Voin is quite the melancholic experience. You’re taking in the atmosphere, uncovering its secrets, and planning your next move. Then things get loud. Suddenly you’re dodging between enemies, slicing at their limbs and chaining abilities to stop them from overwhelming you. Voin is a boomer shooter by way of swords and RPG mechanics, and it’s an awful lot of fun.
Now Sozidar has dropped Voin’s first major update, and it’s filled with new features and mechanics that make the game even better. First up, there’s the new Magma Golem monster, which you can encounter when exploring deep underground. The Enormity difficulty level also poses a huge challenge, as you can now encounter both Brutal and Terrifying enemy types. These opponents inherit random abilities that you’ll need to adapt to on the fly, like throwing boulders or spawning shadow clones – so watch out.

You can also adjust a whole slew of settings, which completely change your experience. Voin’s game speed can be shifted with a slider, you can adjust the camera tilt power, scale the HUD, toggle subtitles, and even automatically pick up items based on their rarity. The different difficulty levels now impact the amount of Ichor you get and the chance of encountering rarer items, so crank up the challenge for better rewards.
Voin’s level selection has even been revamped, so you can now check out a sprawling planetary map while choosing where to go next. Simply pick your destination, and a portal will take you straight there.
Nikita Sozidar has released the first Voin update on Steam, and you can purchase the game at 20% off until Sunday February 9, so expect to pay $15.99 / £13.40 until then. The game is on Valve’s platform here.
