Resources have changed in Civilization 7. They’re now separated into different categories and these change between Ages. You’ll also need to manage your resources via the Resource Management screen. Resources are extremely powerful as they allow for a lot of town and city specialization, and this becomes more pressing as you enter into the Exploration Age and unlock Treasure Resources, and Factory Resources in the Modern Age.

Antiquity Age Resources

Civilization 7 Antiquity Age Sheep

There are three types of resources in the Antiquity age: City Resources, Bonus Resources, and Empire Resources.

City Resources

City Resources can only be placed inside city slots in the resource management screen.

  • Jade
  • Kaolin
    • +2 food to the capital, +4 food to any other city
  • Incense
  • Silk
  • Camels
    • ​​​​​​​+2 additional resource slots
  • Salt
    • ​​​​​​​+20% production towards training units
  • Gypsum
    • ​​​​​​​+2 production to capital, 4+ production to any other city
  • Pearls
    • ​​​​​​​+2 happiness to capital, +2 to any other city

Bonus Resources

Bonus Resources can be placed in any town or city slot.

  • Fish
  • Sheep
    • ​​​​​​​+2 production, +2 happiness
  • Cotton
    • ​​​​​​​+2 food, +2 production
  • Dates
    • ​​​​​​​+2 food, +2 happiness
  • Hides
    • ​​​​​​​+3 production
  • Dyes

Empire Resources

Empire Resources are not slotted into a settlement, but have bonuses that apply to your entire empire.

  • Gold
    • ​​​​​​​+20% gold towards purchasing buildings
  • Silver
    • ​​​​​​​+20% gold towards purchasing units
  • Ivory
    • ​​​​​​​+10% production towards wonders placed in Tropical, Plains, and Desert Terrain
  • Marble
    • ​​​​​​​+10% production towards wonders placed in Grassland, Tundra, and Marine Terrain
  • Horses
    • ​​​​​​​Cavalry units gain +1 combat strength, and an additional +1 against infantry units
  • Iron
    • Infantry units gain +1 combat strength
  • Wine
    • ​​​​​​​+2 happiness in the capital and +10% culture when in a celebration

Exploration Age Resources

Civilization 7 Exploration Age Resources

The Exploration Age opens up several new resources, including Treasure Fleet resources that are only located on Distant Lands – that’s the islands between the two continents if you’re playing on the standard recommended Continents Plus map type.

Some other City and Bonus resources are also added in this age.

New City And Bonus Resources

  • Incense
    • ​​​​​​​Incense provides 100% production towards missionaries and temples
  • Niter
    • ​​​​​​​Siege and Naval units gain +1 combat strength per Niter.
  • Truffles
    • +20% production for units
  • Whales

Treasure Fleet Resources

These resources only act as treasure fleet resources until the Modern Age.

Modern Age Resources

Civilization 7 Modern Age Resources

The Modern Age introduces Factory Resources. These can only be slotted inside a Factory slot within a city or town. Once you’ve built a factory, you can then place more of the same factory resource in the other available slots. Many of the existing resources also change in the Modern Age.

New City, Bonus, And Empire Resource

  • Oil
    • ​​​​​​​Heavy Naval and Cavalry Units gain +1 Combat Strength, and an additional +1 against infantry units.
  • Coal
    • ​​​​​​​Light Naval Units gain +1 Combat Strength. +100% production towards constructing Rail Stations.
  • Rubber
    • ​​​​​​​Infantry and Air Units gain +1 Combat Strength.
  • Sugar
    • ​​​​​​​+6 Food
  • Wine
  • Ivory
    • +4 Happiness, +4 Production
  • Pearls
    • +6 Happiness in the capital, +3 happiness in any other city
  • Silk
    • +6 Culture in Capital. +3 Culture to any other city.
  • Spices
  • Furs
    • +6 happiness in a city with a Rail Station. +3 Happiness to any other city.
  • Tobacco
    • +6 Production in a city with a Rail Station. +3 production to any other city.

Factory Resources

  • Fish
    • ​​​​​​​+5% settlement growth rate.
  • Kaolin
    • ​​​​​​​+3% Culture.
  • Cocoa
    • ​​​​​​​+3% Happiness.
  • Coffee
    • ​​​​​​​+5% Production towards buildings and wonders.
  • Tea
    • ​​​​​​​+3% Science.
  • Quinine
    • ​​​​​​​Units heal +1 HP.
  • Citrus
    • ​​​​​​​+5% production towards naval units.

Factory Resources can only be slotted into Factories. These are constructed by researching the Industrialization tech. Once you’ve done this, you’ll need to build a factory. Once you’ve done so, slot one resource into the factory slot, which will allow you to fill the rest of the settlement with that resource.

This lets you do some fun stuff with city specialization – having a place ready to build wonders, units, generate science, and more.

Resource Slots

Your resource slots are limited in cities and determined by a variety of factors. Camels are an easy, early way to expand your resource slots, whereas later in the game there are wonders, social polices, and research that can be used to expand your available slots.
