When you start your first game of Civilization 7 the game does a good job of explaining all of the numerous new and returning mechanics in this iteration of the series. But one thing that’s left out of the tutorials is how to heal units.

In Civ 7, healing units is actually quite simple and more user-friendly than in previous versions of Civilization. However, because the game doesn’t tell you how to heal units, Civ 7 players may spend a long time wondering how to recover unit HP. This guide explains how to heal your units, and what you can do to increase unit healing in Civilization 7.
How To Heal Units In Civ 7
To heal units, Civ 7 players have two options: Heal or Skip Turn. The Heal action can be found in the extra unit options menu, which can be opened by clicking the grey bar on the left-hand side of the unit menu. This reveals hidden actions that are not visible and not available by default.
- Heal: Found in the extra Unit Options menu, this option will prevent you from taking actions with this unit until it is fully healed
- Skip Turn: Found on the bottom of the main unit menu, this skips the unit’s turn once and grants a single round of healing.
By default, your units will heal about a fifth of their total HP every turn they spend healing. You cannot heal a unit if it has taken any other action that turn – including movement.
Essentially, Heal and Skip Turn will both heal your Civilization 7 units but over different periods of time. While Heal will restore your unit to full HP over a few turns, Skip Turn only heals one turn. This means the game will automatically give you control over that unit on your next turn with the Command Unit action.
But if you Heal, the unit will hunker down until you Cancel the Heal action, or it reaches full HP.

There are 32 achievements in Civilization 7 – here is how to unlock them.
Because the camera will not pan over to the unit every turn for commands if you select the Heal action, it’s easy to lose track of it. The best way to heal units in Civ 7 is to use the Skip Turn action every turn because it doesn’t automate healing and can allow you to react to sudden developments – like a swarm of hostile Independent People that would be better to run away from than to continue healing near.
Some special effects will also heal units, such as the Commander promotion “Field Commission”, which heals 10 HP when you upgrade a unit.
How To Increase Healing For Units
There are a handful of ways you can boost healing in Civ 7. The main way to increase healing is to send your units into Friendly territory before you heal them. Being in Friendly territory significantly boosts the speed units heal, but there are some other ways to increase how much units heal.
-
Units will heal faster in Friendly territory compared to outside of Friendly territory
- Being within either your own civilization’s borders or a City-State you are the Suzerain of will increase healing
- The Field Medic Commander promotion grants this extra healing bonus in enemy territory for units within its radius
- The God of Healing Pantheon grants an extra +5 healing for units on Rural Tiles
-
Fort Towns boost healing for units by +5 while within the town’s borders
- Fort Towns are one of the Town Specialties that unlock when it reaches 7 Population. In conjunction with the God of Healing, your units can heal for nearly a third of their HP every turn.
