Born Again Casting Call Can Only Mean One Fan-Favorite Character's MCU Debut

Summary

  • Daredevil: Born Again might recast Elektra with a Greek character to better align with the MCU’s vision and comic origins.
  • While Elodie Yung won’t be reprising her role as Elektra, the darker and grittier vibe of the show will likely suit the character.
  • The second season of Daredevil: Born Again is still in the works, with fans anticipating its brutality and what new characters might join the cast.

Daredevil: Born Again has brought back a few key players from the Netflix-era Marvel show Daredevil, but one important character from that series might not be making the jump to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in quite the same way that others have, and the way fans might expect.

Daredevil: Born Again has been the talk of the MCU fandom for ages, with fans of the original Netflix show clamoring for a revival within the MCU and MCU fans new to Netflix’s Marvel shows quickly warming to the idea of Charlie Cox’s Daredevil bringing his street-level heroics and grounded approach to issues to the oft interstellar antics of the franchise. Taking its name from an iconic Daredevil story arc and its plot from an even more expansive Marvel Comics event, the show has had fans revved up since it was announced, with even more interest coming its way after production restarted and more elements of the old show were approved to make the transition. Cox was always more than willing to return to his iconic role and has since expressed long-term plans for his MCU role as Daredevil, starting with the now-confirmed second season of Daredevil: Born Again.

RUMOR: The Young Avengers Have Found Their Leader

Marvel Studios has reportedly decided which character will be the leader of the Young Avengers.

While it’s already been rumored that Daredevil: Born Again season two might feature Elden Henson’s Foggy Nelson, another new rumor suggests one Netflix-era character will be recast and bring in a new member to the cast of the show for the second season. According to well-known scooper Daniel Richtman on Patreon, the second season of Daredevil: Born Again is, “casting for a recurring role — a female character in her 40s of Greek descent, with a one-year contract.” While there’s no way to know for sure what character this might be, there’s only one that springs to mind: Elektra Natchios. The character fits the description perfectly and is one of Daredevil’s most important antagonists and allies, and would be the obvious choice for a season two addition. However, the casting call would mean that Daredevil’s Elektra Élodie Yung won’t be returning to the role.

One reason for this change might be an alignment with the character’s origins, as while Yung is supremely talented and in her forties (not that one could tell), she’s actually French. If Marvel Studios intends to make her Greek heritage a more important part of her characters in the MCU, then it makes sense that a reboot/revival would be the right time to recast the role to better align with those goals. It’s a bit of a long shot, but one that can’t be dismissed. Characters in comics often wear their ethnicity or other defining characteristics on their sleeve, and a more catholic Matt Murdock wouldn’t be out of place, either. Another possibility is that Yung simply opted not to return to the role for any number of reasons, ranging from availability to disinterest. Yung has not been sitting idle, and is the lead on the recently renewed Fox show The Cleaning Lady, which is likely only a fractal view of her busy work schedule. Barring some confirmation from Yung herself or someone at Marvel Studios, fans can’t really come to a conclusion as to why she won’t be returning. It’s a bit of a shame, as many fans were interested in seeing Yung reprise her Elektra role in the MCU.

Elektra will certainly fit the vibe of the new show thanks to its darker and gritty approach, an aspect of Daredevil: Born Again that even leading man Cox was surprised by. If the show can live up to the promise of being even more brutal than its predecessor, then whoever takes up the mantle will be well-placed to give fans another version of the character that they can appreciate just as much as the former. However, the show’s second season is still a long way down the line, and fans should be focused on the pivotal first season that’ll set the stage for the Man Without Fear in the MCU.

Daredevil: Born Again is set to premiere on Disney+ on March 4, 2025.
