AMD is “blown away” by the demand for its X3D gaming CPUs, such as the AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D. That’s according to comments made by an AMD executive, who confirms that the chipmaker has “ramped up production massively” to ensure a good enough supply of X3D gaming CPUs for gamers this year.
It’s fair to say that AMD has stomped to a commanding lead in the fight to produce the best gaming CPU over the last few years. The AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D has been widely lauded as the best of the best, all while Intel licks its wounds with products like the Intel Core Ultra 7 265K, which have failed to impress gamers so far.
In an interview with TechPowerUp, AMD vice president and general manager for Ryzen CPUs and Radeon GPUs, David McAfee, shared his views on how the chipmaker is performing. Asked what he would say to gamers struggling to buy a 9800X3D, McAfee confirmed that demand had “blown away” the company’s expectations but that it would be “adding significant manufacturing capacity” throughout the year to improve supply.
Just yesterday we reported on AMD outselling Intel for desktop CPUs by a ratio of 9:1 in some stores. Meanwhile, last month, another AMD executive blamed Intel for 9800X3D stock issues due to the “horrible” launch of Intel’s Core Ultra CPUs, leaving demand for AMD’s stock higher than expected.
However, McAfee confirmed that AMD was delivering new CPUs to retailers each week to help resolve any stock issues. Increasing the challenge of meeting demand for AMD is that these X3D CPUs have a more involved, longer production time than more conventional chips, due to them needing to have an extra 3D V-Cache chip placed on top of the CPU die.
The 9800X3D isn’t the only gaming CPU that the chipmaker has to worry about, however. AMD also needs to ensure enough stock availability for the recently announced 12-core 9900X3D and 16-core 9950X3D chips ahead of their launch, especially with 9900X3D launch date rumors suggesting it could see a release as soon as next month.
Thankfully, these comments suggest that AMD is well aware of the pressure. With AMD production ramped up, gamers will hopefully see availability for these top CPUs, including the 9800X3D, begin to improve over the next few months.
