Summary

  • Gellar expressed interest in returning for Scream 7, suggesting a flashback scene for Cici.
  • Gellar’s character, Cici Cooper, had an entertaining character arc in Scream 2.
  • Including flashbacks in the franchise fits well with Scream’s blend of humor and kills.

As far as horror sequels go, Scream 2 is pretty solid. While the main focus is of course on Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell) attending college and being targeted by another Ghostface, I think the side characters in this movie are particularly entertaining. I loved watching Sarah Michelle Gellar play Cici Cooper, a sorority student who stays home one night when Ghostface attacks. I think Gellar’s horror roles are some of her most exciting because she plays tough young adults who don’t suffer fools and who know what they want. I would be thrilled to see Gellar reprise her role in a Buffy The Vampire Slayer sequel, and I enjoyed watching her play aspiring actress Helen Shivers in I Know What You Did Last Summer, a character who is wiser than she first appears.

Now that many legacy characters are on the call sheet for Scream 7, Gellar posted on Instagram Stories that she would be happy to return to the horror sequel. I think this would be fun, and I have some ideas about how this could work.

Why Sarah Michelle Gellar Should Come Back For Scream 7

Cici Cooper (Sarah Michelle Gellar) in Scream 2

According to Us Weekly, Gellar tagged William Sherak, a producer on Scream 7, and beloved director Kevin Williamson in her Instagram Stories and wrote:

“I mean why not?!? You are bringing everyone else back.”

While some might say that this is impossible because Cici Cooper dies in Scream 2, Gellar made a fair point that many other characters who Ghostface killed are returning to the horror sequel. These include Stu Macher (Matthew Lillard) and Roman Bridger (Scott Foley). But these characters aren’t necessarily still alive in the Scream 7 universe, and it remains to be seen what the franchise will do with them. Sidney could hallucinate Stu and the other characters, and they could also return as ghosts or in a flashback. Any of these three options would work with Cici.

I think it would make the most sense for Cici to come back in a flashback scene. Perhaps there was more to her death than meets the eye, and audiences can learn a big secret about how Ghostface stalked her before killing her. While Laurie Metcalf and Timothy Olyphant, who played Scream 2‘s Ghostfaces Debbie Salt/Mrs. Loomis and Mickey, aren’t coming back for Scream 7, it would still work to focus on Cici. Since many Ghostfaces are motivated by revenge, perhaps the new Ghostface is, too. Maybe fans find out in Scream 7 that Cici actually had an important connection to Sidney and the various Ghostfaces in the franchise.

While it’s hard to ignore the corny nature of many flashback scenes, Scream has many cheesy scenes as it blends humor with kills. Scream is my favorite franchise, but I don’t think any Scream movie is terrifying. I don’t see a problem with including a few flashbacks. Although I’m not certain that Gellar really will reprise her role of Cici, especially since Scream 7 is currently filming, I would be happy to see this become a reality. Perhaps she could come back in Scream 8 (if another sequel is made, of course).

What Happened To Sarah Michelle Gellar’s Scream 2 Character?

Cici Cooper (Sarah Michelle Gellar) in Scream 2

Sarah Michelle Gellar’s Scream 2 character, Cici Cooper, has a brief character arc, but she’s hilarious and entertaining. Scream 2 is an excellent sequel because even the more minor characters add something dynamic and fun to each scene that they’re in. In one memorable scene, she argues with Mickey Alteri about horror movies and says that scary, gory films can’t influence someone to hurt or kill another person.

When Ghostface phones Cici when she’s alone in her sorority house, she immediately becomes annoyed with them. Since the Ghostface phone calls are such an iconic and significant part of the franchise, I particularly love this scene. It’s always fun when a character banters with Ghostface. Cici says, “Who are you calling for?” and when she doesn’t get the answer she wants, she asks, “What if I said goodbye?”

She then asks Ghostface:

“Why do you always answer a question with a question?”

When Ghostface says “I’m inquisitive,” she says, “Yeah, and I’m impatient. Look, do you wanna leave a message for somebody?” Then Ghostface asks:

“Do you want to die tonight, Cici?”

I liked watching Cici try to get away from Ghostface. Like Gellar’s I Know What You Did Last Summer character Helen Shivers, Cici doesn’t want to be a damsel in distress and does her best to fight back. Sadly, they both die, but while Gellar won’t return for the I Know What You Did Last Summer sequel, perhaps there’s a place for the talented star in Scream 7.
