Harrington played dirty cop, Quinn, in six seasons of the original Dexter series, and he was one of the characters who suspected Dexter wasn’t quite who he said he was. Joey Quinn’s Return Was Teased During Desmond Harrington’s Appearance On A Dexter: Original Sin Companion Show

Dexter: Original Sin has been a huge hit for Paramount+ with Showtime, and that is partly down to the superb marketing the show has received. After each episode, there is a companion show called Final Cut presented by New Blood star, Jamie Chung, who played the memorable true crime podcaster, Molly Park. Each episode features a special guest to discuss the latest episode of the Dexter prequel series. This week, Desmond Harrington (a.k.a. Joey Quinn) made an appearance to discuss Dexter: Original Sin episode 8.

As the episode came to a close, Jamie Chung asked Harrington if he was going to be making an appearance in the sequel series, Resurrection:

I will not say a f**king word.

Chung pushed him on the subject, but Harrington insisted he wouldn’t reveal anything, but he did follow this up with a cheeky smirk. He’s coming back: he has to right?

If Joey Quinn was to re-appear in Dexter: Resurrection, it can never be suggested that the decision was purely to satisfy the legacy fandom. Of course, many fans would be delighted to see Dexter’s former frenemy return to the fold, but there is a logical reason to bring him back. Joey Quinn probably knew Dexter’s secret, and this story is one that needs to be revisited in the sequel series. During Desmond Harrington’s appearance on Final Cut, he was asked if Quinn knew Dexter’s secret and he said:

I would have my own thoughts about it, but the name of the show is Dexter. You are there to serve that storyline, and for me, it was always like, I would follow the writers and wherever they decided to take the character, i went with. If i did know, i don’t even know if I want to say I think I might know. The beauty of my character is, it’s an easy thing to write him off as stupid, but he was not.

Harrington makes a very good point, but he’s also potentially holding back because Quinn might be returning, and there is bound to be a big reveal about whether he did actually know Dexter’s secret. Quinn was smart, and he probably knew it wouldn’t end well for him if he pursued Dexter. Also, as a character with loose morals himself, there is a chance he might have understood and even appreciated what Dexter was doing by taking bad guys off the street via his dark passenger. Quinn was all about self-preservation, and as much as he was a talented detective, he didn’t have the urge to seek justice to the extent of someone like Sgt James Doakes. He sought the help of Stan Liddy to look into Dexter, but when he was brutally killed by him, he backed off his own investigation, especially when he figured out that Dexter covered for him when Liddy’s blood was found on his shoe. Quinn was also in love with Debra Morgan, and this likely played a part in his decision to turn the other cheek.

Quinn’s reaction to Dexter’s ‘self-defense’ killing of Oliver Saxon in the final season of the original Dexter series is also very interesting. He shows no surprise that a forensic analyst would have such quick reflexes when dealing with a notorious serial killer. Could that be because Quinn knew Dexter was also a serial killer? Yes. If Quinn does return in Resurrection, it’ll be interesting to see how he reacts after hearing Dexter was the Bay Harbor Butcher all along. He is bound to be conflicted, especially due to his former relationship with the now deceased, Debra Morgan. It was revealed in New Blood that Quinn was still working for Miami Metro, so he would likely go along with Angel Batista’s investigation to bring Dexter to justice in the upcoming sequel series.
