100 Girlfriends season 2, episode 3, “What Does the Maid See?” ended with Mei Meido confessing her love to Rentarou after they made eye contact. This episode focuses on learning more about Mei’s character quirks and motivations.
Like most 100 Girlfriends episodes, this one is split into two parts. The first part is about Rentarou and Mei going on their first date, while the second part is about Hahari forcing everyone to wear maid outfits and get them soaking wet. One part is possibly the most wholesome bit in the anime so far, while the other is as degenerate as can be. Have a guess at which one’s which.

Rentarou and Mei’s Date
The Maid Gets Served
For their first date, Hahari orders Mei to be Rentarou’s personal maid for a day. Mei’s personality becomes clearer throughout this segment of the show. She’s a person whose entire being is dedicated to serving others. So much so, that when Rentarou asked her for her likes, interests, and hobbies, all she could think of was her liking Hahari and Rentarou.
The whole segment was really heartwarming since it was about Rentarou trying to get Mei to open up and be her own person. The way he did it was smooth too. He ordered Mei not to be of any use to him, but no matter what she did, he spun it in a way that made it beneficial for him. In the end, she couldn’t find a way to not please him, so Rentarou said that Mei might as well do as she pleases, because no matter what she does, he’ll still appreciate her.
“You’re helping me just by existing. You don’t have to follow my orders or try to serve me. Just by being yourself, you are worthy.” Rentarou to Mei
The date also reveals some important information about Mei’s past and why her loyalty to Hahari is so strong. Apparently, Mei was abandoned to freeze in the snow as a child but was rescued by Hahari. Later in the episode, it’s revealed that Hahari actually wanted to raise Mei as her own child along with Hakari, but the former refused. Mei felt indebted to Hahari and wanted to serve under her as a maid for the rest of her life instead. It would have been a perfectly wholesome story if not for the fact that the main reason Hahari saved the young Mei was basically just because she was cute, but that’s just Hahari for you.
How Is Mei Compared to the Other Girls?
If you had to pick one, the girl Mei currently resembles the most is Nano Eiai. They’re both sort of robotic since all of their actions are carefully thought out to align with their ways of thinking. Nano believes in efficiency; she only does what is necessary, nothing more, nothing less. But with Mei, it’s loyalty. Anything and everything she does is in the service of her master. Still, though, that’s a pretty niche similarity, and they’re both very different people. For one thing, Mei seems more capable of showing a wider range of emotions than the stoic Nano.
If anything, Mei resembles Rentarou far more than any of the other girls. They’re both incredibly loyal to the people they love and would do anything for them, even things that make no reasonable sense. In that way, Mei feels like a female version of Rentarou; but one that doesn’t have a harem, of course. It kind of makes Rentarou sound like a hypocrite by saying that Mei doesn’t have to pander to him so much, when he essentially does the same thing with some of the girls, but maybe that’ll be addressed in a future episode.

Hahari Wants Wet Maids, Chaos Ensues
In the previous episode, Hahari threw a fit because she wanted the others to turn into babies and wear the outfits she made. In this episode, Hahari threw a fit because she wanted the others to wear the maid outfits she made. The irony of the oldest girl being the most immature is… well, it’s something. If you like the insanity of 100 Girlfriends more than its wholesome bits, you’ll be glad this segment exists.
And if the girls wearing maid outfits weren’t enough, which it wasn’t, Hahari also had them participate in a water pistol fight with a kiss from Rentarou as the reward. The competition itself was pretty entertaining, even ignoring all the lewd parts. Seeing Eiai go all Terminator mode and Hakari holding her mother hostage was unhinged in a non-sexual way, and it’s nice to have some variety with 100 Girlfriends‘ humor.
