The Last of Us Part 2 spoilers ahead

HBO’s The Last of Us is ramping up the hype as it makes its exciting return for its second season. The live-action series will be adapting characters and arcs from the popular Naughty Dog game, The Last of Us Part 2, and while the upcoming season will welcome major characters from the sequel, it will also introduce a “prominent character” who was only mentioned in the game and fans of the title believe that they have figured out that it could only be one person.

Other than the beautiful storyline about Bill and Frank, the first season of The Last of Us was a mostly faithful recreation of the original 2013 game. In the HBO show’s recent images and trailers, it seems as though the creative team is aiming for the same process, but one character isn’t exactly what many fans had hoped for. Abby Anderson, the co-protagonist of Part 2 and played by Kaitlyn Dever, seems quite a lot different from how she looks in the game, with her most prominent muscular physique being completely toned down. Some fans of the sequel felt that this is what made Abby so unique and the backbone of her initial story arc. However, showrunners Neil Druckmann and Craig Mazin stated that they were more interested in someone who could play the compelling character well, rather than just look the part.

Last of Us Fans Believe Season 2’s Mysterious Character Is the Prophet

the Prophet from The Last of Us Part 2

One of the most intriguing mysteries for The Last of Us fans currently is who is the “prominent character” that co-creator Neil Druckmann mentioned during a feature interview with EW. “There is a pretty prominent character that is talked a lot about in the game, similar to what we did with Frank [Murray Bartlett] in season 1, that is in this season,” said Druckmann. Although both Druckmann and Craig Mazin didn’t provide any additional details about this obscure character or who would play them, fans think they have worked it out.

On The Last of Us‘ HBO series Reddit page, the question of whom this important character could possibly be was posed to other fans and the overwhelming response was that it would only be the Seraphite Prophet. For those who haven’t yet played The Last of Us Part 2, the prophet was critical to the establishment of the Seraphite cult and claimed to know the reason why the Cordyceps infection was plaguing society. Before her death, her beguiling sermons imprisoned the minds of the community’s residents, convincing them that the infection was caused by humanity’s sin and so, the virus was a second chance for people to redeem themselves.

Even though the Prophet was the top choice due to her being talked about a lot in the game and a huge factor in how the Seraphites behaved, another character who players didn’t see in the game was also mentioned. Eugene Linden served in the Fireflies alongside Tommy Miller and was a good friend of Dina’s, but he had already passed away from a stroke before players got to meet him. Although there is a chance that the character could be introduced in season 2, it’s unlikely to be who Druckmann is referring to since he wasn’t really mentioned again after Ellie and Dina found his weed basement in the patrol chapter.

HBO hasn’t set an official release date as yet for The Last of Us Season 2, but we do know it will arrive sometime in April.
