Cooking is a valuable skill that every Sim should have in The Sims, as they need to deal with that hunger. However, cooking in the game also comes with the risk of starting a fire and burning your whole house down. Worse yet, killing your Sim.

If you’re like us, just because you’re good at the later games doesn’t mean you’ll still be prepared for the chaos of the original Sims game!
To avoid such a fate, it’s best to teach your Sim how to cook. Additionally, a higher cooking skill level helps Sims cook faster, saving you more time for other things. This guide will help you build your Sim’s cooking skills, in the best possible way.
Why Is The Cooking Skill Important?
Food prepared with low-level skills will not fulfill a Sim’s Hunger to the fullest. The more skillful a Sim is at cooking, the better food they’ll make and the less hungry they will be.
Sims with no cooking skills can also start a fire immediately. Furthermore, Sims with less than three points in their cooking skill, are still at high risk of starting a fire.
If your Sim starts a fire, make sure to call the firefighters and try to extinguish it immediately, or else your house may burn down.
To help reduce the risk of fire, make your Sim cook food using a microwave oven or make a salad by using the refrigerator as it has less chance of catching fire.
As you keep doing that, your cooking skills will increase over time. Once you reach skill level three cooking, start using a stove.
Meals cooked on a stove fulfill a Sim’s Hunger needs the best.
As a safety measure, install a Smoke Detector from buy mode. If the device detects fire, it will immediately call firefighters to the scene without a call. If you don’t know where to find one, here’s how:
- Press F2 or click on the furniture icon to open the Buy Menu. Press the same button again to get alternate options.
- Click on the Miscellaneous button (triangle shape made out of three filled dots) and then click on the Electronics option (stereo player icon).
- You’ll find a Smoke Detector as the first option. You can buy it for 50 Simoleons and place it near your cooking area.
If the fire is small, Sims can extinguish it themselves. Just click on the fire and select the extinguish option, instead of waiting for the fire brigade.
Instead of just relying on Sims’ ability to extinguish fire, it is best to always have a Smoke Detector regardless. In case things go south, the fire brigade will take care of the rest.
How To Build The Cooking Skill
To build Sims’ cooking skills, you’ll need these items:
- Microwave Oven
- Stove
- Grill
- Refrigerator
- Book Shelf (Cookbooks)
In The Sims, Sims can gain cooking skills by cooking on a daily basis or reading cookbooks. If your Sim doesn’t have any cooking skills, purchase a Cooking Guide. Here’s how you can buy one:
- Open the Buy Menu by pressing F2 or the furniture icon on the bottom left.
- Click on the Miscellaneous button (triangle-shaped icon made out of unfilled dots).
- Open the Knowledge category (bookshelf icon).
- Buy a Precarious Designs D.I.Y. Bookshelf (or any other bookshelf) and place it in your home.
- Click on the bookshelf and select Study Cooking to level up your Sim’s skill.
If you click on the refrigerator and make food, your Sim will do its best to make food that is of the most suitable quality at its skill level.
Continue cooking by using a stove as it will increase your Sims’ cooking skills further. Consistently doing this will max your cooking skills fast.
Tips To Keep In Mind When Building The Cooking Skill
If your Sim doesn’t have any cooking skills, it is best to Study Cooking until your Sim reaches a minimum of level three. Additionally, you can also level your Sim’s Cooking Skills to Max just by reading books.
Studying cooking also increases their Fun Needs, if your Sim has an interest in it. You can check this under the Job category of your selected Sim.
Even after leveling up your Sim’s Cooking Skills to the max, there is still a chance of them starting a fire. It is best to keep a Smoke Detector if you wish to keep your home safe.
Cooking with a Grill can increase your cooking skills. However, it comes with the highest risk of starting a fire. Furthermore, food made through Grills doesn’t have the best quality. If you wish, you could buy the item to keep it as a backyard decor, but your Sims will autonomously use it.
The culinary arts career track would be a great choice if a Sim manages to level up their Cooking Skills. A Sim with proficiency in cooking can earn a maximum of 930 Simoleons per day.
