EA is prepared to move next Battlefield game, probably because of GTA 6

It’s been confirmed that a new Battlefield is in the pipeline. The currently-untitled installment in EA’s long-running shooter franchise is expected to arrive at some point in the next fiscal year, from April 2025 to April 2026. However, it’s been suggested that the actual window is up in the air due to some variables within the industry, like a certain major release from Rockstar Games, perhaps.

It’s been a few years since the last new PC game under the banner, with Battlefield 2042 coming out in 2021. So, the reveal of another iteration in the FPS series being close to completion wasn’t all that surprising. EA kept details limited, but the plan is to get the next Battlefield out in the 2026 fiscal year.

Comments from EA chairman and CEO Andrew Wilson on an earnings call suggest the company is prepared to shift if needed. “There may be some things happening in the year that may cause us to think differently about our launch timing. We have a fiscal year ’26 launch window that the team is targeting,” he said. “But if we got close to that time frame and believe that this wasn’t going to be a great window for us, then we would take a look at what an alternate window might be.”

Delays and shifts to upcoming PC games can happen for all sorts of reasons, but “some things happening” sounds like Wilson may have some particular things in mind. The GTA 6 release window is currently set for the back half of 2025. If that holds, it would be wise for any other big releases to give themselves room to move out of the way, because Rockstar’s next open-world game will be attracting all the attention.

April 2026 gives the developers behind this new Battlefield some wiggle room. As a large multiplayer game, it’s a project that will want as much space in the calendar as possible to attract and retain players. Battlefield 2042 wasn’t exactly the most well-received game, so this next one will be aiming to recover some goodwill. Wilson adds this is the most EA has invested in a Battlefield entry thus far.
