Dying Light 2’s roguelike Tower Raid is returning to the zombie game for good

Techland’s Dying Light 2 remains one of the best zombie games on Steam. Resident Evil has the classic survival horror; Project Zomboid brings the survival strategy; DayZ integrates multiplayer tension; Dead Island 2 is a colorful arcade romp; and Left 4 Dead 2 delivers co-op coordination. But Dying Light’s blend of open-world parkour and brutal FPS combat makes it a real winner – and as Techland celebrates its third anniversary with a new update, it confirms that a fan-favorite mode is finally arriving as a permanent fixture.

Dying Light 2 has just turned three years old. In that time we’ve seen plenty of improvements and upgrades, but one of the most popular additions has been the roguelike Tower Raid. First introduced in an initial testing phase back in July 2024, it transforms the zombie game from its more persistent open-world form into a run-based challenge mode. Tasking you with climbing to the top of an immense skyscraper through floor after floor of intense battles, facing different modifiers on each attempt and collecting loot along the way. It’s already proved very popular, and now it’s here to stay.

Having recieved plenty of feedback, Techland now announces it’s planning to roll out Tower Raid as a permanent mode on Wednesday February 19. You’ll be able to access it from the main menu, where you’ll go to a specific hub for the mode. There you’ll find Tower Raid vendor Jai, who has an inventory of Dying Light 2 weapons, tools, and perks specifically set up for the climb. As you level up your reputation, you’ll also be able to complete assignments for another vendor, Sola, who offers rewards you can transfer across to the main game.

Once you’re ready to start, you’ll pick a character and perks, and set your game’s length and difficulty. These range from a four-floor ‘Quick’ mode up to ‘Elite,’ which tasks you with overcoming a full 12 floors with additional modifiers on top. There are four difficulty settings available when playing on Quick or Normal, but choosing Elite mode requires you to commit to one of the two most challenging options, Hard or Nightmare.

You don’t have to wait until Tower Raid arrives for an update, however. Releasing tomorrow, patch 1.21 will introduce some new anniversary features. There’s a new photo mode frame, more billboards and bounties, and the promise of festive events. Among the other upgrades are improved blueprint descriptions, the ability to loot police cars, and a reworked, rebalanced prologue to help new players get into the game a little more easily.
