Summary
- Dragon Ball SD chapters now free on YouTube, still mostly limited to Japanese audience.
- Dragon Ball SD is a chibi-style remake of the original manga aimed at children.
- Dragon Ball Super manga to return this month, focusing on Goten and Trunks, potential internet sensation.
A few Dragon Ball SD chapters are now available for free on YouTube! Despite being a long-established franchise, unfortunately, not every Dragon Ball media reaches international audiences, although the most hyped entries usually makes their way outside Japan.
Dragon Ball SD is one of those sad cases of a spin-off that struggles to get attention outside Asia, even though it has been serialized for over fourteen years in Japan.
Now it’s a bit easier to read it, as the official Saikyo Jump account has uploaded the first chapter of the series on YouTube. It features sound effects and soundtrack music, improving the reading experience, but it’s only available in Japanese (but those learning it should definitely give it a try):
In addition to the first chapter, they posted another video with Chapters 1-20 (Volumes 1 and 2) – it’s also in Japanese:
What Is The Dragon Ball SD Manga?
Dragon Ball SD is like a remake of the original manga, with characters drawn in “SD” (“chibi”) style – it is aimed at young children, featuring simplified texts. It follows the original story, but author Naho Ooishi sometimes makes jokes and references to upcoming events.
Ooishi has created other Dragon Ball spin-offs, such as Dragon Ball: Episode of Bardock (2011), as well as Oh!! New Gadget Super Lovers (2008–), Dragon Ball: Episode of Bardock (2011) and the manga adaptation of Dragon Ball: The Return of Son Goku and Friends! (2009).
The videos were uploaded to celebrate the release of Dragon Ball SD Volume 11 in Japan. The series, with over 70 chapters, is currently covering the Androids Saga.
The manga, which has been serialized since 2010 in Saikyo Jump, is not officially licensed in English.
More Dragon Ball Content Coming This Month
This month, besides Dragon Ball SD, fans will finally be able to check out a new chapter of Dragon Ball Super in V-JUMP – the manga has been on hiatus since Akira Toriyama died in early 2024. It will be focused on Goten and Trunks, and it has the potential of breaking the internet.
The chapter was announced as a special one, but it’s possible they will finally give a release window for the series to return to its regular schedule.
Dragon Ball Super as well as the original manga are published in the US by VIZ Media.
