During One Piece’s Thriller Bark Arc, the audience is introduced to a beloved character in the community, Perona, who possesses the power of the Hollow-Hollow Fruit. While the name doesn’t give away what the ability does too much, this fruit allows Perona to utilize many different skills relating to ghosts. This includes her main ability, Negative Hollow, which lets her create various ghosts that she can control. When one of these ghosts passes through an opponent, it makes them feel extremely negative about themselves.
As for all of One Piece’s powerful Haki users, Haki itself relies heavily on the willpower of the user. To put it simply, this ability allows the user to harness the power of their own will, manifesting it in the form of supernatural abilities. This comes in three separate forms, Armament Haki, which enhances physician strength, Observation Haki, which enhances perception to a supernatural degree, and Conqueror’s Haki, the ability to impose willpower on another individual. Although these abilities may seem straightforward, they are incredibly strong and are heavily utilized by the strongest One Piece characters.

Without willpower, which is fundamentally the basis of Haki, a character theoretically shouldn’t be able to access the ability.

Although the limits of the Hollow-Hollow Fruit haven’t been shown in the series so far, this could be a unique interaction for Perona, if she returns to the main story of One Piece. This ability, with Perona hopefully fighting on the side of Zoro and the Straw Hats, could be used as a way to prevent certain Haki users from accessing their abilities. Plus, with all the other tricks that the Hollow-Hollow Fruit has, Perona would be an excellent support for One Piece’s Final Battle.

However, since the fruit hasn’t been shown off in the series for a while, the Hollow-Hollow Fruit may struggle against One Piece’s strongest foes. Although, so far, the ability has been shown to work despite the target’s strength, a character with strong enough Haki may be able to resist the ability entirely. Additionally, fast characters should be able to easily dodge the ghosts without too much effort. On top of this, a character who is already extremely negative, like Usopp, is immune to the ability. Though he may have gained more will with his Haki awakening, he may still be immune to the effects of the power.

Despite the potential complications, the pessimistic One Piece character, Perona’s power, the Hollow-Hollow Fruit, seems like it could have an interesting interaction with Haki. Although it seems unlikely that it would completely counter the ability, if it does sap the target’s willpower, it could be used to temporarily negate Haki. In the end, though this is a niche interaction in One Piece, it would be interesting to see how it works before the Final Saga ends.
