Modern choice-driven RPGs have been known to delve into romance occasionally, and while the feature is not always requested nor desired, it can still add compelling layers to a narrative. Romance may not be the heart and soul of Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 and its predecessor, but the opportunity still presents itself, with Henry’s romance with Kingdom Come: Deliverance‘s Theresa being the first example of this in the series. Unfortunately, Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 technically being a standalone game, despite continuing the first game’s story, means Theresa might have been left in the dust in exchange for a greater focus on Henry’s journey in front of him.
That isn’t the case, however, as Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 does what it can to ensure Theresa is remembered and even included. After Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2‘s trailer showed Henry with another woman, there was some concern that Theresa would be excluded from the game. While she doesn’t ultimately appear in the game in physical form, she can still be a part of Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2‘s story if players choose for her to be. This is great news for fans of the first game who invested in Kingdom Come: Deliverance‘s A Woman’s Lot DLC, which saw Henry finally sealing the deal with Theresa.

The explicit details as to why Warhorse chose to forego including Theresa in Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 are unclear, but it makes sense in some ways, given the fact that A Woman’s Lot was only DLC for the first game and KCD2 is meant to be a standalone experience. Regardless, Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 does feature Theresa, though she is only present in mention. This shows Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2‘s commitment to being a true role-playing experience, as Henry can still technically be in a relationship with Theresa, even though players don’t get to see that relationship firsthand.

Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2‘s intro isn’t the only time Theresa is brought up either, as her relationship with Henry can be brought up throughout the sequel’s story if players confirm the two are a couple during its beginning. At certain points during Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2‘s story, another NPC might flirt with Henry or attempt to romance him in some other way, after which players can often choose to say that they are in a relationship with Theresa. This allows her presence to remain throughout the game, although it can simultaneously shut the door on any other potential romances in Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2.
While the game may not bring Theresa back in person, acknowledgment of her through Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2‘s dialogue choices and narrative moments shows its commitment to fans. Rather than discarding past relationships for the sake of a clean slate, Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 allows returning players to carry the weight of their choices in the first game forward, reinforcing the role-playing experience it aims to offer. While it’s disappointing that there are no direct interactions with Theresa, her continued presence proves that Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 values continuity, as well as its characters.
