Summary
- Pirate alliances in One Piece are based on common goals, even with former enemies.
- Characters like Katakuri and Fujitora may aid Luffy due to shared beliefs and respect.
- Despite past conflicts, characters like Doflamingo may aid Luffy against mutual enemies.
Monkey D. Luffy is a simple but heroic pirate who has little issue working with even most of his own former enemies as long as they have a clear common goal. As recently as Egghead, he even held a brief truce with his former enemy, Rob Lucci, with the pair deciding to briefly deal with the Seraphim who posed a threat to them both, despite neither of them seeming to like the alliance.

5
Charlotte Katakuri
Mutual Foes, Mutual Respect
- Affiliation: Big Mom Pirates
Charlotte Katakuri is one of two individuals slated to become captain of the Big Mom Pirates in his mother’s absence. Despite having less seniority than his elder half-brother, Perospero, his strength and authority leave many siblings clamoring for him to fill the position. He previously encountered Luffy during his visit to Totto Land, where the latter was trying to prevent Sanji’s arranged marriage to Katakuri’s half-sister, Pudding.
Luffy and Katakuri fought each other as an all-out battle erupted between the Big Mom Pirates and Luffy’s allies. Although Luffy was clearly outclassed at first, he managed to improve rapidly, with even Katakuri sharing in his earnest belief that he would become the King of the Pirates when all was said and done. They parted with a level of shared respect.
More recently, the Blackbeard Pirates were confirmed to have kidnapped Pudding, presumably to make use of powers she may or may not have access to as a human-three-eye-hybrid. This gives Katakuri sufficient motivation to face Blackbeard. At present, it is somewhat unclear what exact scenario would make the two team up, but Luffy’s shared dislike of Blackbeard and Katakuri’s own respect for Luffy at least puts the precedent in place.

Issho “Fujitora”
Shared Ideals
- Affiliation: Marines, Aoi Kingdom (Formerly)
Marine Admiral Fujitora (with the given name of Issho) was one of two selected for the position during the timeskip, after Kuzan’s desertion and Sakazuki’s promotion to fleet admiral. Like Kuzan before him, he cares little about following direct orders if they conflict with his view of justice. He notably blinded himself out of repulsion for the world’s injustice. Examples of Issho flouting the position include issuing a direct apology to King Riku for the government misconduct that resulted in a coup at Dressrosa, and aiding in the freedom of slaves owned by the World Nobles, after the Revolutionary Army infiltrated Mary Geoise.
Fujitora briefly aided Luffy in the past by using Devil Fruit powers to drop rubble on pirate ships owned by Doflamingo’s clients, who targeted Luffy for defeating their dealer. He also performed dice rolls to determine the pirate’s luck, actively increasing the window of opportunity Luffy and his allies had to escape after Dressrosa. This is an extension of Fujitora’s greater admiration for the pirate, who he noted seemed to be a kind and gentle individual despite his criminal status. When one looks past his legal obligations as a marine admiral, Issho’s own anti-authoritarian streak is not too different from Luffy’s, with both prizing the common good of the people over the typical ambitions of most marines and pirates.
With subsequent appearances focusing on his continued good qualities, Fujitora seems teased to aid the pirate, perhaps in a more direct manner, at some time in the future. Fujitora’s own willingness to defy even World Nobles is also noteworthy. He is very likely opposed to the genocidal actions of the Five Elders, and he may become an opponent to the government as Imu’s machinations are revealed.

Wapol
Currently Traveling With Vivi
- Affiliation: Black Drum Kingdom, Bliking Pirates, Sakura Kingdom (Formerly)
Wapol was the captain of the Bliking Pirates and the former ruler of Sakura Kingdom when it was known as Drum Kingdom. His selfish behavior made him immensely unpopular with his citizens. He was eventually defeated by Luffy, which resulted in him being permanently thrown out of his kingdom. He was homeless after his exile but crawled out of his position by using his Devil Fruit to inadvertently create toys and precious metal out of garbage he consumed. After becoming independently wealthy, he was gifted a new kingdom; the Evil Black Drum Kingdom.

At the Levely, he was an inadvertent witness to the existence of Imu, alongside a few other characters. One of said characters was Nefertari Vivi, who witnessed her father’s assassination at the being’s hand. The pair fled the scene, eventually finding solace with “Big News” Morgans, who currently has them hosted aboard one of his ships. Recent events have led to speculation that Vivi will rejoin the Straw Hat Pirates, as she was previously a member of the crew during her fight against Baroque Works.
While Wapol lacks her moral fiber, there is still a possibility the desire for protection may see him begging to aid his former enemies.
2
Kuzan
A Secret Ally
- Affiliation: Blackbeard Pirates, Marines (Formerly)
Kuzan was formerly a marine admiral with the alias Aokiji. He previously altered his ideals to Lazy Justice after the Ohara Massacre caused him to rethink the marines. This caused him to be fairly lax with the massacre’s sole survivor, Nico Robin, even after encountering her years later as a member of the Straw Hat Pirates. In their last encounter, he encouraged her to make good use of the life she was given. Alongside the majority of the marines, he was later involved in the Summit War against Luffy, who was being supported by both the Whitebeard Pirates and a number of fugitives from Impel Down.
He defected from the organization sometime after losing the bid to become fleet admiral to Sakazuki, better known as Akainu. He has since joined the Blackbeard Pirates, more recently having been revealed as one of their Ten Titanic Captains. With Kuzan’s ideals being the reason behind his defection from the marines, it seems odd he would join with one of the most infamously immoral pirates in the series.
Yet the mask had already begun to slip on his reasoning behind joining the crew. He was persuaded by Blackbeard and his crewmates once they discussed being allies of convenience rather than any genuine pretense of camaraderie. It is clear now that Kuzan is transparently using the crew to further some presently unknown agenda. The exact ambition is unknown, but it may align with Luffy in the future. More recently, the Straw Hat Pirates have become acquainted with Jaguar D. Saul, a giant ex-marine and old friend of Robin — who Kuzan speculated he killed during the Ohara Massacre. It is possible the little-known fact of Saul still being alive may cause Kuzan to rethink his actions or otherwise reveal his hand.

Donquixote Doflamingo
A Shared Hatred For World Nobles
- Affiliation: Donquixote Pirates, Seven Warlords of the Sea (Formerly)
The exact future role of Donquixote Doflamingo is unclear. One thing that is far more clear is his hatred for World Nobles. Having formerly been a noble as a child, his life was blissful, with everyone catering to his whim. But his father, Homing, realized he was becoming a spoiled brat and attempted to change him, in part by renouncing his family’s claim. This resulted in the family suffering poverty and hatred from their neighbors, who couldn’t care less if they were no longer World Nobles, — except to assure that they wouldn’t be punished for attacking them. Ultimately, Doflamingo chose the path of a pirate to reclaim power. He was also eventually invited to join the Seven Warlords of the Sea, giving him a greater level of government clearance than most pirates.

One Piece: Best Donquixote Doflamingo Quotes
Donquixote Doflamingo’s lust for power in One Piece is illustrated in his self-serving and arrogant speaking style.
However, his dreams were dashed once Luffy defeated him, leaving him a prisoner in Impel Down. Yet with all his power gone, he maintains a burning hatred for World Nobles, practically salivating at the idea of the many forces at play removing them from power. As long as Luffy directly opposes them, Doflamingo probably won’t think twice about aiding even his detested former enemy. Doflamingo has notably long leveraged an unclear secret from his time as a noble, which has kept the government cautious about how they treat him. He may make use of this to gain allies on the inside and outside Impel Down.
It should be noted that Luffy also shares hatred for World Nobles, having even physically assaulted one in the past. Having worked alongside Crocodile, an enemy of comparable reputation, Luffy probably would take help from Doflamingo if he deemed it necessary. That being said, the possibility of the pair meeting once more as enemies is also not out of the realm of possibility.
