Whichever starting playstyle you choose, you might still wonder which skills are the best to unlock early on, and with three separate tabs of leveling to peruse, it can be daunting. Here’s everything you need to know about making the most of those early-game perk points.

In your Main Level, one of the earliest perks you can get will be a choice between Opportunist or Charming Man.

Opportunist

If you lose Reputation, the drop will be 10% less.

Charming Man

If you gain Reputation, the increase will be 10% higher.

While this is a fairly simple difference between gaining or losing Reputation, you’d be best to go for Opportunist. Drops in reputation will happen depending on your actions, mistakes, and dialogue choices, and will often be necessary as you can’t please everyone. Mitigating that effect as much as possible will be beneficial in the long run, as gaining reputation is an easy and common enough occurrence to not require the Charming Man perk.

For the other stats in this menu, there will be some options of perks within, and while you can gain most of them over time, here’s which ones are better to choose first:

Strength
Hard-Working Lad This will help with carrying heavy burdens and increasing your carrying capacity. It will increase as your strength increases, but to have this boost early on means you can pick up more loot, which is a great method of making more money in the early game.
Agility
Featherweight This will decrease your fall damage by 30%, which is great for exploring the map in the early stages of the game, as drops can be deadly to your health. Other early perks in this stat lean towards requirements for weapon use, which can easily be unlocked later on, while falling off things is going to be a problem from the start.
Vitality
Thick-Blooded While you could go for Ascetic to mean Henry will not go hungry as quickly, Thick-Blooded means Henry will not bleed as quickly – and from experience, bleeding will be a much more urgent issue than hunger early on, and probably at all times in the game.
Speech
Silver Tongue While Polished Wares means you get 10% more groschen for top condition weapons and armour, with Silver Tongue, you’ll have an advantage in haggling every transaction. This means you can more often get more groschen on any goods, but can also pay less – and in those early days with little money, that’s a big help.

In the Skills tab, you’ll find all of the perks for professions, social skills, or passive abilities. Which ones you favour and level here comes down to your playstyle and which crafts you lean towards, but there are a few that are worth focusing on in the early game.

Houndmaster
Search! After the opening of the game, you’ll need to undertake a side quest to find Mutt, but you should do so as soon as possible. Mutt is a great help with many things, including directly within quests, but the Search! ability is of great use at all times. Allowing Mutt to look around and bark when there’s something of interest is fundamental in not missing anything, especially when exploring the map for the first time.
Scholarship
Wonders of Beasts Following on from the helpfulness of Mutt, the Wonders of Beasts skill means you will level up faster in both Houndmaster and Horsemanship, which is the best choice for making the most of your trusty companions as soon as possible.
Survival
Master Cook You’ll be keeping a lot of food for Henry, but it will spoil over time. Cooking or smoking is the best way to get the most out of ingredients and food, and with this perk, the process will put the item straight back to 100% condition, meaning it will last the most amount of time possible.
Stealth
Bushman Even if you’re not planning on being a sneak thief, utilising Stealth to stay alive early on is a great method, and Bushman means that while you’re less visible in bushes, you now also make a lot less noise in them.
Natural Camouflage Similarly, when making use of Stealth, with this perk dirt on your clothes and face will lower your visibility stat, meaning you have more chance of going undetected. And early on, you’ll probably be dirty quite a bit.

Finally, the Combat tab will focus on the areas of expertise with different weapons and combat styles. These will heavily depend on which weapons you choose and how you like to play, but there are a few perks of note that should be unlocked as soon as possible.

Warfare

Head Protection

A pretty self-explanatory perk to have, Head Protection means your helmets will absorb 20% more damage, which is excellent when you’re fresh to the game, wearing a bucket hat, and hoping to make it through each encounter. And when an arrow to the head is as deadly as you’d think, making the most of helmets is key.

Against All Odds

More often than not, you’ll be outnumbered in a fight, which is something that you’ll get used to. However, with this skill, you’ll get a +2 bonus to Strength, Agility, and Warfare while outnumbered, giving you a widespread advantage in the fight.

Unarmed

Sandman

This is one you might not be able to get right away, with a level requirement of 12 in Unarmed, but Sandman makes takedowns and stealth kills significantly more successful, which should be a priority to give you an advantage and avoid larger combat encounters.

Marksmanship

Hal Shot First

Even if you don’t lean heavily into ranged combat, this skill will be helpful to gain the upper hand. This makes the first shot you fire, whether bow, crossbow, or hand cannon, do 15% more damage. This can give you an advantage before a fight, or potentially even allow you to avoid a fight altogether.
