As the protagonist of One Piece, Luffy is full of redeeming qualities. Despite this, the negative quality that is usually to his detriment the most is his lack of intelligence. Due to his lack of brains, Luffy has made some awful and incredibly dumb decisions throughout the story of One Piece so far.

Being a character of action, the protagonist of One Piece, Luffy, tends to act first, and then think about the consequences later. Although many wouldn’t regard it as being entirely stupid and more motivated out of passion for freedom, actions like taking on Crocodile or punching the Celestial Dragon could definitely be considered dumb decisions. Another honorable mention is when Luffy thought that Nami was turned into a skeleton during One Piece’s Skypiea Arc. After being swallowed by Nola, Luffy saw a skeleton that he thought was dissolved by stomach acid, despite the real Nami being right next to him. However, while Chopper is checking Sanji’s notes, Luffy decides to eat it anyway, since he claims there is no such thing as an inedible fish. Despite his high resistance to poison, this decision proves to be nearly fatal, with Reiju needing to come in to save Luffy. Overall, this decision is especially dumb on Luffy’s part due to how many warnings he had not to eat the fish.

In many ways, making these dumb decisions helps Luffy from becoming a stale and boring protagonist who is perfect in every single way. Plus, these dumb decisions are perfect examples of why Luffy needs his crew to help him on his journey, making up for the shortcomings that he does have.
