- The series suggests Mark may be part of Lumon’s sinister plan to control entire identities.
Lumon Industries has always had a sinister grip on its employees, but Severance fans have long speculated that the company’s influence stretches far beyond the walls of its headquarters. One of the biggest mysteries in the series is Mark Scout’s personal life and how it ties into Lumon’s greater agenda. While it’s clear that Mark has been under the company’s watchful eye for some time, an intriguing theory about the Apple Tv+ series suggests that his sister, Devon, may not be who she appears to be.
At first glance, Devon seems like a normal, caring sister who wants the best for Mark. But there are strange inconsistencies in her behavior, particularly when it comes to Mark’s severed existence. If Devon is more involved with Lumon than she lets on, it could mean that Mark’s chip is part of a much larger experiment—one that could change the very nature of severance itself.

Is There A Severance Spy Among The Outties?
One of the biggest clues pointing to Devon’s potential connection to Lumon is how she reacts when Mark’s innie tells her the truth in the Season 1 finale, “The We We Are.” The moment is intense, with Mark revealing his true identity, yet Devon doesn’t react as strongly as one might expect. Instead of immediately pressing him for more details or taking drastic action, she seems oddly composed. While some might interpret this as shock or confusion, it’s possible there’s something much more sinister at play here. Perhaps it suggests prior knowledge. If Devon already knew about Lumon’s plans for Mark, she wouldn’t be surprised to learn that his innie was awake in the outside world. She would presumably know about the Overtime Protocol. Even if she was surprised for a minute that the Innies were using it, she wouldn’t be totally shocked. And someone who had never talked to an Innie would at the very least, be quite confused as to how this was happening at all.
“The We We Are” also spends an unusual amount of time on Devon’s baby search subplot, which could be a calculated distraction. The frantic search for her missing child feels like an oddly-timed narrative diversion. Could it be that Devon knew where the baby was the whole time, and that the search was just a convenient way to delay her confrontation with Mark? If Devon is working for Lumon it would make sense that she’d want to stall Mark’s discovery for as long as possible. To wait for the OTP to end. While Cobel/Selvig is an operative of Lumon, she’s not a baby killer, she’s not inhuman and the idea that she did something horrible, or even kidnapped the baby always felt like contrived tension.
Another key point is Devon’s relationship with Ricken. While she comes across as level-headed and pragmatic, Ricken is an eccentric philosopher who seems totally disconnected from reality. Fans have long questioned why Devon, a seemingly rational person, would end up with someone so outlandish. One possible answer? It was orchestrated. If Devon is involved with Lumon, then her relationship with Ricken might serve a purpose—perhaps to keep her tethered to a “normal” life or to prevent Mark from suspecting her involvement. Or of course, Ricken is a Lumon agent as well.
Mark S Is The Next Stage In Lumon’s Plan
If Devon isn’t really Mark’s sister, or if she’s in on Lumon’s experiment, then what does that mean for Mark himself? The answer could be even more disturbing than the existence of a spy among the outties. Lumon’s obsession with Mark suggests that he isn’t just another severed employee—he might be the next step in their long-term goal.

Mark is already a special case within Lumon. His wife, whom he thought was dead, was actually stored inside the facility. This alone proves that Lumon has a vested interest in controlling his life, both inside and outside work. But if Devon’s connection to him is fabricated, it might mean that Mark’s memories were never real to begin with. The severance chip, up until now, has been used to separate an individual’s work and personal lives. But what if Lumon has taken it a step further? What if Mark’s memories were implanted entirely?
The idea that Lumon is using Mark to test new severance technology fits with the company’s history of experimentation. If they’ve found a way to create entire lifetime memories—giving someone a full history, a family, a past—then Mark might be the first real test subject. His innie, upon waking up in the real world, would assume he has a life that’s his own, but in reality, everything he remembers could be an artificial construct. Devon, as part of the ruse, would serve to reinforce the illusion.
The implications of this theory are massive. If Lumon has truly reached the point of fabricating entire lives, then severance is no longer about work-life balance—it’s about creating and controlling entire identities. Mark might not just be a victim of severance; he could be the first human being whose entire existence is a Lumon experiment.
As Severance moves forward, the full extent of Lumon’s control remains to be seen. But if Devon is indeed working with them, then Mark’s journey to uncover the truth may be far more complex—and more terrifying—than he ever imagined.
