Sci-fi RPG with Fallout vibes unveiled by former Dishonored developers

It’s anyone’s guess when we’ll see another Fallout, so some former developers of Prey (2017) and Dishonored are working on a retro-futuristic project that may just fill the gap. So far, it sounds like a mixture of Bethesda’s post-nuclear role-playing game, Weird West, and the aforementioned beloved immersive sims, but it might be a ways off yet.

The upcoming PC game comes from Wolfeye Studios, the developer behind Weird West. The studio was founded by Raphael Colantonio and Julien Roby, who were previosly higher-ups at Arkane Studios and had a hand in Dishonored and Prey (2017), two of the best action games ever.

Wolf Eye has just revealed plans for its next project: a first-person action-RPG set in an anomalously futuristic universe full of retro tech. There’ll be branching narratives, crafting, and what sounds like all the usual trappings for a big budget new PC game. The announcement comes with the reveal that NEOWIZ is publisher, a growing South Korean outfit that handled Lies of P and Skul: The Hero Slayer, among other worthwhile releases.

“With NEOWIZ, we found a partner that truly understands our vision,” Julien Roby, CEO and executive producer at Wolfeye Studios says in a statement, “and is as committed as we are to delivering a unique, creative and memorable game experience that will appeal both to our long-term fans and new players alike.”

The Assassin’s Creed franchise and Pentiment, a gorgeous adventure game from 2022, are namedropped as references for other staff at Wolfeye, in case it wasn’t clear how experienced this team is. The early screenshots have the grandeur of Dishonored or Thief, mixed with the fine details and intrigue of The Outer Worlds or Bioshock.

Expectations are certainly lofty. Going from the top-down Weird West with its Diablo-like UI to first-person immersion and ever-expanding vistas is quite the leap. That said, the studio heads have shipped multiple games of that magnitude that kept their distinctive features front-and-centre, so they know what to compromise, and what to keep integral.

If this new, as-yet-untitled project can meet expectations, it could be something special. Our lists of the best space games and best horror games will give you plenty to keep yourself busy while we wait for more.
