Realistic FPS Arma Reforger continues its huge Steam comeback with new update

The realistic, tactical type of FPS game is having a real resurgence right now. Gray Zone Warfare was a big hit in 2024, and Escape From Tarkov is still pulling in the players. You’ve also got Delta Force, Ready Or Not (which shifted to Steam and version 1.0 in 2023), and Hell Let Loose, not to mention the reveal of a new Battlefield. Given that list, you might not have expected that Arma Reforger, the awkward middle child of Bohemia’s pseudo milsim series, would be able to find any love. But the Arma 3 follow up is still dominating on Steam, and a new update shows the charge isn’t slowing down.

Released into early access back in 2022, Arma Reforger initially struggled. For the dedicated fans of Bohemia’s FPS game, it may have been too streamlined, too simple, and too much like a placeholder while the studio worked on Arma 4. For the outsiders, Arma’s trademark brand of hardcore, tactical shooting could have presented an unsurmountable barrier to entry. For a long time, it seemed like Arma Reforger was doomed to the footnotes of FPS history. But then it got ported onto the PS5, complete with crossplay, and everything changed.

Back in January, Arma Reforger hit a concurrent Steam player count of almost 16,000, a new all-time high for the once-forgotten shooter. It seemed like the FPS had hit its peak, but it kept on going – just nine days ago, more than 22,000 people logged into Arma Reforger on Steam simultaneously. As of this writing on Tuesday February 4, in the last 24 hours it’s had a higher concurrent player count than Fallout 76, gigantic looter shooter The First Descendant, and its genre rival Ready Or Not.

And Bohemia is giving Arma Reforger some love, too. As the game continues its march on Steam, the developer has just dropped a new experimental update solely for Arma Reforger’s PC version. Experimental updates are not final – they contain changes and tweaks that Bohemia is considering implementing and wants players to test out. The developer will gather feedback and then decide which features to keep and which to abandon.

In the new Arma Reforger experimental update, Bohemia has adjusted server hosting settings, changing how players can access and view a list of server admins. Vehicle physics have been partially tweaked and there are some revised animations for when you are turning the engine off or on. A small audio adjustment means that vehicle impacts are now quieter if multiple impacts happen at once, so that you don’t get jump scared by a sudden cacophony. Some reload and weapon pickup sounds have been changed and several bugs have been squashed. The complete patch is already available.

We’ll have to see how far Arma Reforger can rise. In the meantime, there are plenty of upcoming PC games that could challenge its recent dominance, and you might also want to try the best multiplayer games available right now.
