Summary
- Onimusha 2: Samurai’s Destiny is being remastered for PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One in 2025.
- The remaster will be released at some point later in 2025.
Capcom ended its latest Spotlight event with the announcement that Onimusha 2: Samurai’s Destiny is being remastered. Onimusha 2: Samurai’s Destiny was originally released for the PlayStation 2 in 2002, earning mostly positive reviews and enjoying strong sales at the time of its release. Unfortunately, it’s remained trapped on the PS2 for decades, with Capcom giving no indication that it ever planned on remastering the game – until now.
In 2018, Capcom released an Onimusha: Warlords remaster, making the original game playable on newer hardware. Unofficial reports indicated that the Onimusha remaster sold very poorly, which dashed hopes that the sequels would get the same remaster treatment. Indeed, many assumed that the Onimusha franchise was effectively dead.

Onimusha Way of the Sword promises an action game in a dark Japanese fantasy setting.
While it’s coming a whopping seven years since the release of the last remaster, Onimusha 2: Samurai’s Destiny is finally getting a remaster. The remaster was shown off as the closing announcement of the latest Capcom Spotlight event, confirming that the game will be released at some point in 2025, though a specific release date was not announced. Notably, Capcom is only releasing native versions of the game for PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One, so while Onimusha 2 will be playable on PS5 and Xbox Series X through backward compatibility, it won’t be getting a proper release on those platforms for whatever reason.
Onimusha 2 Remaster Confirmed for 2025
The Onimusha 2 remaster looks like it’s following in the footsteps of the first Onimusha remaster, meaning it won’t feature any substantial new content or major upgrades, but will instead spruce up the graphics a bit with a high-definition makeover. Naturally, Onimusha fans may take this as a sign that the other games in the series may get remasters down the line as well, though nothing to that effect has actually been announced at the time of this writing.
Even with Onimusha 2 finally getting remastered, the bulk of the Onimusha franchise remains trapped on older hardware. Onimusha 2 was followed by Onimusha Tactics on the Game Boy Advance, the fighting game spin-off Onimusha Blade Warriors on PS2, and the critically-acclaimed sequel Onimusha 2: Demon Siege. There was also 2006’s Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams, which similarly earned a great deal of praise.
It remains to be seen if any of these other older Onimusha games will ever get remastered, but in the meantime, a brand-new entry in the series has been confirmed. Onimusha: Way of the Sword is launching in 2026, serving as the first brand-new game in the series in 20 years.
