The film adaptation of Just Cause has been slowly moving through Hollywood’s development hell for almost 15 years. Now, the project is taking another step forward with Aaron Rabin, one of the writers behind Prime Video’s Jack Ryan series.
According to The Wrap, Rabin is set to work alongside Blue Beetle director Angel Manuel Soto, who joined the project last May. Rabin’s previous credits include Silent River and Nobody 2, which will feature Better Call Saul’s Bob Odenkirk reprising his role from the first film.
John Wick and Deadpool 2 director David Leitch is producing Just Cause alongside Kelly McCormick. Their previous producing credits together include Violent Night, Bullet Train, Nobody, and The Fall Guy. Universal Pictures is set to release Just Cause, but the studio hasn’t set a date for it yet.
The original Just Cause video game was released in 2006, and it introduced players to Rico Rodriguez, an operative of The Agency who is adept at infiltrating hostile foreign nations and slowly engineering regime change by any means necessary. The most recent game in the series was Just Cause 4 in 2018, but publisher Square Enix confirmed that a new Just Cause game is in development in 2022. However, Square Enix canceled Just Cause Mobile in 2023 shortly before its full release. Additionally, Just Cause developer Avalanche Studios shut down two of its studios in 2024 as part of the thousands of jobs that were lost in the industry last year.
