Want to learn how combat and combos work in Kingdom Come Deliverance 2? The combat in KCD2 is based around directional inputs and predicting where your opponents will strike. There’s a parry and counter system, as well as seven different weapon types to get a handle on.
No doubt you’ve heard all about how Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 is a massive, innovative RPG game, you should still read more about what we thought about it in our review. Otherwise, you might need a bit more help getting a grasp on its complicated systems, such as how Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 perks work in the game. Before you get on to all of that, read on to get a better grasp on combos and combat.
How Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 combat works
Combat is, at its core, straightforward. Enemies hold their weapon to either the left or right, or above their head or below their waist, and so do you. This signifies where they will attack from and also tells you which direction you should attack them instead – generally the opposite. If your opponent holds his mace above his head, attack from below. If their weapon arm is outstretched to your left, hit them from the right.
First and foremost, combat works far better with a controller than with a keyboard. If you’re able to play with one, we recommend doing so. Furthermore, the story pushes you toward using longswords in many scenarios, so we recommend getting a handle on them as soon as possible.
Right after Henry gets out of the pillory during the opening events of the story, you’ll find yourself with abysmally low skills that make combat extremely difficult. Believe it or not, this is the hardest part of the game. Head to the Nomads’ Camp to train with Master Tomcat right away, he teaches you some basic sword combos along with the powerful Master Strike counter-attack.
When you have an opening, combos can be utilized to strike down multiple enemies in quick succession. You have to input the attacks in the (usually) three-directional combo each time the previous attack hits. You can parry attacks by pressing block right as the green shield symbol appears. However, Master Strikes are more powerful and more complicated. To pull them off, you must attack when you see the shield icon from the opposite direction of your opponent. If they attack low, attack high at the right moment.
