The first step will always be preventing a fire, but if the unimaginable happens and there are flames charring the things your Sims own and threatening their lives, you’ve got a couple different potential options to try putting out the fire you started in The Sims.
Prevent Fires With Skillful Sims And Careful Furniture Placement
While it’s true that every Sim needs to eat to stay alive, you’ll need to be extra mindful of who has permission to use the stove, since Sims with Cooking skill below three may start fires when cooking. The further below level three they are, the more likely it seems that they’ll set your kitchen ablaze with their culinary efforts. As such, it’s not a bad idea to read Cooking skill books from the bookshelf for a while before you start the oven to make dinner.
It’s not just the kitchen you need to protect, though, since fireplaces can be dangerous if they’re not placed just so. Putting a fireplace too close to furniture is all but guaranteed to spread the flames, so unless you’re trying to kill a Sim on purpose, you and the couch may all want to move back a bit. Also, keep any oxygen bars in other rooms, since that pressurized gas will almost always catch fire if a fireplace is lit in the same room.
You can also start fires in The Sims by:
- Lighting fireworks inside, which will seemingly always result in a fire.
- Hitting something flammable with a firework, be that a piece of furniture or even another Sim.
- Failing enchantment spells when trying to learn magic, lighting the object you’re trying to improve on fire instead.
- Failing a wish from the genie lamp, with multiple wishes potentially resulting in destruction.
Thankfully, planning ahead tends to pay off, since you can place fire alarms in rooms with sources of flame, like the kitchen or any living area that has a fire place or genie lamp. When placed near items that may catch fire, smoke alarms will blare with a loud beep as soon as a fire is detected nearby, and this will automatically summon the fire department to come help with the danger so your Sim doesn’t have to.
But there are plenty of other fire hazards around the world, just waiting for a careless Sim to set them off, and once it starts, fire spreads to neighboring tiles to keep burning your things and Sims until it runs out of things to burn or is extinguished. This produces ashes left behind, which your Sim will consider trash and will need to clean up, lest it tanks their Room score.
How To Extinguish Fires In The Original Sims
Just like in real life, fire is extremely dangerous to your Sims, and they can easily lose their life to the flames if they’re not careful. If a fire breaks out on your lot, a Sim will begin to panic when they discover the blaze, whether a fire alarm is going off nearby to alert the right people or not. Even if you cancel the action in their queue of them reacting to the fire, Sims often return to the fire to keep panicking until it’s put out.
You can’t purchase a fire extinguisher beforehand, but fear not, since Sims told to put out the fire produce an extinguisher from out of nowhere to fight the blaze. This is, however, a little risky, since your Sim is prone to canceling this action in favor of panicking instead. In general, your best bet on putting out fires in The Sims 1 is to install a fire alarm and let the professionals handle it when they arrive.
If you didn’t install a smoke alarm before the fire started (and probably wish you did now), you can instruct a Sim to call the fire department on the phone, but again, if they’re too close to the flames, they may cancel this action to run back and panic some more. The firefighters need to be able to reach the flames when they arrive, but they’ll reliably extinguish the blaze.
An odd way to put out fires is to use the Crystal Clear Ability Rock if your Sim is magically inclined. The black crystals are the ones that allow you to bring in a supernatural rain cloud to put out the fire before it spreads too far, but if your Sim isn’t bothering with magic, it’s not an easy-to-access option and must be obtained ahead of time.
