The best shooters are fast. Nothing quite beats the thrill of darting around a level, sliding into enemies, exploding their heads, and doing it all with a sense of unrivaled style. That’s why I regularly come back to Vanquish, Titanfall 2, and Neon White’s campaigns, because sometimes I just want to shoot some guys and look good doing it. This is where Turbo Overkill comes in, as the beloved boomer shooter is suddenly cheaper, and prettier, than ever.
In Turbo Overkill, you play as the aptly named Johnny Turbo. After returning to his hometown of Paradise, Johnny finds that it’s anything but as rogue AI Syn has possessed the entire populace, turning them into mindless augmented minions. Brandishing hidden arm rockets and a chainsaw leg, Johnny can bounce around the neon-soaked cyberpunk hellscape at speeds that’d put Titanfall 2 to shame, and even flip off the bad guys while doing it.
Inspired by the ‘90s titans like Doom, Quake, and Duke Nukem 3D, Turbo Overkill is an FPS game all about speed. You can strafe, wall-run, dash, and bounce around each arena in a frenetic display of hyper-violence, as explosions light up the night sky. If you love movement shooters as much as I do, you owe it to yourself to play Turbo Overkill, and now’s the best time to do so.
Turbo Overkill has been available on PC for a while, but the shooter’s new console release comes with plenty of bonuses for your rig if you’d rather play with a mouse and keyboard. The biggest change is easily Turbo Overkill’s Enhanced Visuals mode, which does exactly what you think. Lighting, reflections, and shadows have all been overhauled, meaning Turbo Overkill looks better than ever without sacrificing the game’s original artistic intent.
With the highly coveted ‘overwhelmingly positive’ rating on Steam, Turbo Overkill has built up quite the following. 95% of the almost 5,500 user reviews praise the game on Valve’s platform, and that number is likely to grow.
That’s not all, though, as the game’s price has permanently dropped to match the cheaper cost of the console version, giving you even more reason to pick it up. It’s also on sale, so it’ll cost you even less than that for a limited time. If you’d rather try before you buy, though, there’s also a Turbo Overkill demo available right now.
You can now buy Turbo Overkill on Steam at the new low price of $19.99 / £16.75, but there’s also a 25% off sale until Wednesday February 12 so expect to pay $14.99 / £12.56 until then. You can find the game right here.
