One of the most popular horror comedy shows of all time, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, is apparently about to make a return to the airwaves. The Sarah Michelle Gellar-starring series that ended over 20 years ago, looks like it will be getting a revival as Hulu gets ready to introduce new Buffy the Vampire Slayer episodes to fans for the first time since 2003.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer had quite a run after it premiered in 1997. The supernatural drama saw Gellar battle against vampires, demons, and other forces of darkness including the very embodiment of all the world’s evil. Buffy didn’t fight all this evil by herself, she had a gang of friends including key characters like Xander and Willow that would routine help her solve the mysteries of the Monster of the Week. The TV series quickly became a huge hit and produced many spin-offs with books, TV, podcasts, and video games in its wake as well as one spin-off series that aired alongside it for a few years in Angel. Although it’s been off the air for more than 20 years now, Buffy the Vampire Slayer‘s episodes are still watched today by its massive fandom who would love nothing more than to see a reboot or revival of the series. Now it looks like those fans are getting their wish.

Buffy The Vampire Slayer Never Dies

According to Deadline, Hulu is close to pilot order, which would officially revive the Buffy the Vampire Slayer series on streaming. Sarah Michelle Gellar is expected to return alongside the new revival and it will be helmed by Oscar winner Chloé Zhao who is said to be a life-long Buffy fan.

The news breaking about the revival comes not long after Gellar was asked whether she would be open to such a project and whether she felt as though it was something that would ever happen. At the time, the actor, who is currently starring in Dexter: Original Sin, didn’t think it was likely but noted she’d be open to something if it came around. It appears that when asked about a reboot or revival, she kept the rather massive secret under her hat.

Beyond the pilot, Deadline also reports that a writer’s room is being put together. That would seem to indicate that Hulu believes once Buffy makes her official return from the dead, it will be popular enough to have at least one season of new episodes. It’s also worth pointing out that this would not be a reboot, but is expected to continue where the original series left off in some way.

Alongside the announcement of this new Buffy the Vampire Slayer series, the production team, which includes Gellar, announced that original creator Joss Whedon would not be involved in the project in any way. Once a highly celebrated writer and director in Hollywood, Whedon hasn’t been involved in any official capacity for any movies or television shows since 2021 after allegations of improper conduct surfaced.
