This list has been updated to include additional Materia as you’re able to equip many on each party member right away and a lot of Materia will need to be leveled up throughout many chapters of the game, so it’s best to start as soon as possible.

An honorable mention for this list that is still worth putting on it is the AP Up Materia. While this materia can’t be leveled up, it does double the amount of AP earned by linked Materia, and it should be linked to any Materia found on this list.

Linked Materia is represented when two Materia slots are connected in the menu, and only one Materia can be linked to this one at a time. There are only a few AP Up Materia in the game, and the first one is found in the Mythril Mine. Once you get this Materia, you should take advantage of it and always have it equipped throughout the rest of the game.

The Chakra Materia is a healing option though it’s more limited in that it can only heal the caster. It does have the bonus of also curing poison and will heal more the lower your health is at. While this may seem like a limited Materia, it’s best used when left on Tifa.

Tifa and other frontline fighters will almost be in the thick of fighting, and can also quickly charge up ATB. While this Materia won’t be a good party-wide healing option, it is very useful to have on a character who will more often find themselves low on health. It can also free up backline magic users to hit weaknesses with powerful magic instead of always focusing on healing.

The nice thing about this Materia, besides saving a slot on armor or a weapon, is that Ice and Fire spells also come with status effects. Ice can freeze enemies, for example, which makes sense from a logical standpoint. Lightning and Wind Materia is another combo from Chadley, but that’s in his Junon shop.

Elemental Materia

Elemental Materia can turn any weapon into an elemental nightmare for enemies. For example, combining Elemental Materia and Ice Materia on one of Tifa’s gloves will make her hits strike with Ice power. This is great against enemies weak to Ice but bad for enemies that can absorb Ice attacks.

Elemental Materia can also absorb that attached element’s power for heroes, so it is both an offensive and defensive Materia which can be acquired through one of Chadley’s simulation courses, Battle Intel: Conqueror of the Skies.

Still, it’s good in the early game because players can’t get Magnify Materia until Chapter 9 when Cait Sith joins the crew.

Magnify Materia can make any spell target multiple allies or foes in battle. So, a good combo for this would be Magnify Materia plus Healing Materia, but that is a tip for another day.

This Materia is a percentage increase, making it more efficient every time your characters level up. Stacking multiple leveled-up MP Up Materia can also have you easily double a character’s MP, giving them a seemingly endless pool of MP to never stop casting spells.

First Strike Materia will fill up the ATB gauge for a character at the start of battle. Normally, the ATB gauge increases as players attack enemies. Starting with a bit filled, or a whole bar completely, will allow players to get the edge on enemies.

For example, using Assess at the start on a new enemy or boss can make all the difference. The first available piece can be found via the mission, Grasslands Battle Intel: Horror on the Range.
